It looked like on the last lap he stepped inside the rail but it looked like only 1 or 2 steps. Not sure the ruling outdoors. If so, completely ridiculous, i hope it was an official who saw that and not a protest because that would be an all time lame move to protest. He earned that win.
With about 150 meters to go he turned to his left to check on his lead and took a couple of steps on the inside of the rail.
I can't confirm if this is the reason why, but I saw it on the live stream.
Can confirm. Ridiculous if true. First ever national champion. If North Central coach did this lost all respect for the program. RWU is the champion no question.
Can't say if this was a coach but I can say Braden (2nd place, bumped to 1st) from NCC is a stand up guy. I cant imagine he would ask for that.

I absolutely could be wrong, but there is an official sitting, pointing directly at where it would have happened. If it was a protest, it would normally take a lot more time to resolve. It would take a lot of time to file that protest, so I can't reasonably believe that it was a protest.
Maybe 2 steps inside the rail at 9800m of a 10000m race that he clearly had won and obviously was not intentional. Ridiculous DQ. A shame these DQs tend to happen often at the D3 outdoor champs (5k in 2023).
It says he is still a junior so hopefully he stays healthy and uses this as fuel for his summer training and races to come. He ran that 10k with guts.
I was there. Officials were not going to do anything (because he gained no advantage), until 5+ Wartburg guys started yelling at the official and getting in his face. BS that someone who has only one coach vouching for him can get ganged up on by a team full of people trying to influence the result.

Gonna need someone to confirm this before I start ripping Fartburg. I hate stupid DQs that are not in the spirit of the sport.
Two things can be true: Stupid DQ AND people need to not run so close to the rail that they have basically no space, I see a lot of people do this with the obsession of shortest line possible but they are leave half an inch between their left foot and the rail at max fatigue. If I'm about to win a race, and I have a big lead, I'm taking every precaution and am running in the middle to outside of lane 1 the entire last lap.
Warburg sucks. All of that for a singular point. Tassey worked his butt off from an injury and for a slight misstep he looses a national title. Disgusting and vile from the whole Wartburg program. I hope La Crosse drops 60 on their head the next few days. Absolutely disgraceful, but knowing them they will blow up like they did at the 2022 XC championships, and 2023 XC championships, and well I think u know how they perform at big meets.

Generally true, but I think Tassey may have been passing a lapped runner on the inside (the runner had moved out to let him by), so that might not have possible.
Is this true?

0% chance this happened.
Everyone, including Wartburg, knows that UWL is going to win this meet by 30+ points.

Not only was there a DQ in this race; its hard NOT to find a DQ in several other races today.
To be fair, officials play an important part - and there are times when a DQ is warranted. But if one is warranted, it needs to be obvious an unfair advantage was given - or an obvious disadvantage placed on another competitor.
I attended the 2023 D3 champs (Rochester, NY) and same thing happened - lots of DQs. I wonder if their are officials in this region that only feel relevant when they issue a DQ. In 2023 I saw a laughable DQ. Interestingly the same official made the same DQ call in multiple heats (questionable in all cases) at the same point on the track.
Why would I make this up? Officials did not wave the yellow flag until after Wartburg complained. 3 steps or not, BS DQs are what keep D3 looking like a joke
Wartburg took 2nd at 2022 XC Nationals. Watched the race online...he definitely took multiple steps. Totally sucks.
I don't feel bad for him because he shouldn't have looked back. He tripped over the rail when he was looking back.
What's so hard about just sprinting to the finish line? If you are going as fast as you can, there is no need to look back.
