I was inspired by the previews of the UAA and NESCAC, so I decided to make a breakdown of the NCAC too. I should note: these rankings don't account for incoming freshmen, most of whom have not been announced yet. I've also given the top 20 returning athletes individual rankings. These are based on an average of last year's conference and regional performance, and don't consider track times.
For legibility, I'm going to post one team at a time. Let's get started:
#1 John Carroll is clearly the team to beat in their first year in the NCAC. They lose valuable seniors in Dominic Delmoro, Ryan Champa, Barrett Scheatzle, and Tommy Naiman, but have a deep squad to replace them. At this point, I can't see any other team matching JCU's 4-6. Their only weakness is inexperience – the Blue Streaks will have no seniors in their scoring five, and two key runners (Payne and Dienes) have never run the 8k.
- Nate Julien [JR] was solidly in the 25-minute range last fall, and finished 24th at regionals. On the track this year, he set fast PRs from 1500 to 10k (3:59/8:34/15:04/31:40). As a junior, Julien will be one of the most experienced runners on a young John Carroll team.
- Sam Su [SO] focused on the 1500 this spring, and ended his season with runs of 3:52 and 3:53 at last chance meets. His 5k time of 15:08 is less impressive, but he only ran that distance twice this spring. Last cross season, Su was somewhat inconsistent, but ran 25:27 for 16th at the OAC meet. With a great track season under his belt, he’s well-positioned to improve this fall.
- Charlie Payne [SO] apparently didn’t race last fall, but ran some pretty quick times on the track. Payne ran 4:00/8:39/15:05, and also took 3rd in the OAC steeple in 9:31. If he can run similarly well on the grass, he’ll be a strong scoring runner for his team.
- Joey Naiman [SO] ran 26:02 at SUNY Geneseo’s pancake-flat course last year, and followed it up with a 26:10 at the OAC meet. His track times are decent, with a 4:02 and 15:18 to his name.
- Phil Coury [JR] was two seconds back from Naiman at Geneseo, but dipped under 26 at the OAC champs. He had a solid track season, running PRs of 32:14 and 15:29 in his last two races.
- Matthew Dienes [SO] also didn’t race cross country last year, but ran a competent 15:34 this spring. He should be able to step up to the 8k reasonably well.
