With his mileage, there'd be no right to expect much faster just now but he looks like he's jogging. The endurance isn't fully there to break four just yet, as a sophomore, and he might get a lot stronger and become more of a 400/800 guy but it looks like he'll get it as a junior next year.
A pretty good performance but shows that he is not a miler. Especially on his somewhat strength based program. I dont think he can become one either. Fast 400/800 guys cant just increase mileage and become better at endurance events. The same thing that makes them respond well to sprint training makes them respond poorly to true endurance training.

Webb ran 4:06 as a sophomore. Centro / Nuguse / Hocker much slower. I don’t see how this “shows he isn’t a miler”… when he is running a lot less mileage and a lot fewer endurance workouts.
I’m not saying he is a miler. But if a sophomore is training a on a low mileage, sprint based program, and is running faster than our most prodigious talents at the same age, that’s promising.
He could be a 400 / 800 / miler right now depending on what he wanted to focus on.
To me, he’s an 800 guy, but saying this proves he isn’t a miler is a terrible take.

Precisely. If your season opening mile is 4:06 as a high schooler, and you are a 47, 1:48 guy, that makes you a potential 4 minute miler right now.
Plenty of hs 4min guys have made the jump to 4:00 in the June races. His 4:14 and 4:06 are positive, showing his range does go up to the mile.
Barring injury this guy can be next Kessler. Let's see where his focus is for national meets and maybe USATF.

lol wut
Once upon a time, any HSer running 4:06 would be pretty dang impressive. But a sophmore running 4:06 is already crazy in its own right. Combine that with his 400/800 times and the type of training he does, this is quite impressive.
Lots of people have strength but having the 400 speed is key. Its a limiting factor for people like Teare etc in the 1500.
I won't be surprised if we see this kid 5-10 years from now making a US team in the 1500.

But what’s the obsession with moving him to 1500/mile? Breaking 4 in HS is a cool thing, so yeah worthwhile pursuit but he is fast enough to run 1:45 right now, and he seems a perfect 800 prospect. Unless he stagnates, he should be an 800 guy who maybe dabbles in the 1500/mile like Wanyonyi until he’s past his 800 running prime (typically early 20s).

Disingenuous as hell. 30 - 35 mpw of mostly intervals is not strength based. Your jealousy is showing. No doubt you’re praying he never runs the mile again.
4:06 as a soph with his limited mileage is amazing.

I personally think HS is the perfect playground for a talent like him. His 4x4 ran 3:15 so that’s pretty competitive. I, for one, am not trying to see him be a miler. He can dabble in 200s and 5k cross country as much as he wants.
He’s already split 45.3.. if he can keep his same training program, he could split 44.x as a junior and run sub 4. He’s just so different than anything anyone has ever seen.
I hate letsruns obsession with guys moving up. Obviously a very impressive performance but
1. Much less impressive than his 1:46 indoors
2. not as impressive as his 46.3 (!!!) at least according to IAAF points calculator, which says it’s equivalent to a 3:58 mile.
yeah bro might end up running more mileage, doing more T, getting way stronger, but you could say the same about getting older, developing, probably doing more lifting and plyos. He’s a brazier type of runner, perfect for 800 with some range. That’ll be fun for a few years, but in today’s USA track world, he’ll need to develop into a sub 3:29 guy to make a team one day in the 15. I mean Marco freakin Langon has run 3:33 as a true junior and that’s not even his best event. Cooper could end up being the short distance goat in grand slam though

God thank you. So many people in another thread about him running 46.30 were blabbering about how he's gonna suddenly be a world class 1500/miler some day. Like that's NOT HOW THAT STUFF WORKS.
LRC junkies will see any 400m/800m talent run a remotely fast mile and say, "yeah, there's a future sub 3:50 mile guy right there"
No. Even if he does break 4:00, (which I'm not saying he never will) that still doesn't mean he's gonna be a freaking WR contender or something. Good lord these people are ridiculous. Let the kid stick to his obvious specialties and pursue it. Stop fantasizing about a move-up. It's not that simple.
Him switching to the mile would require an entire revaluation of his training, which would just be dumb. Just because he runs 46.3 and runs ~ 35 mpw doesn't mean he'll break the national record for it. Take a step back yall.
