That’s not a bad question for a stats nerd. Henry Rono held both WRs simultaneously for 6 years at 8:05 and 27:22–could it really be that 27:22 is still the fastest 10k by someone who could rightly be called “a steepler”? It’s a little surprising there’s not an individual I can point to who’s run like, 8:02 and 26:50, but I don’t think such a runner exists.
As for the thread, it’s as good a time as any to give it the old college try. I don’t see how it could ruin his season unless there’s a Girma-esque disaster.
Edit: Anthony Rotich ran 27:08 last year, which is better than his PB in the event he’s made a career in.

Not a bad idea for the twins to explore more of the niche events. They’re in no man’s land in terms of talent. They’re very good runners, but not elite talents. Probably not enough speed to be decent pros.
should definitely look into the steeple, ultras, and beer miles where they can truly shine.
What's the fastest 10,000m PB for a steepler? Lex is currently 40th in the world at that event (27:48/1149pts).
WA tables convert that to 8:24, which is respectable for D1. Do Santos and Young know something we don't or is this just for fun?
Doug Brown ran 27:54 forty-eight years ago. Same year he was the first American to break 8:20.
Mike Pierce beat Doug Brown in the HS state meet mile and set the Grand Blanc HS school record at 4:14.8. Grant Fisher broke the mile school record at that same school in 3:58 and now holds the American record for 10,000m.

One should never speak about the steeplechase until you've actually run on. Oregon miler AJ Acosta, who ran a 3:53 mile, gave it "the old college try" and it was an unmitigated disaster.

I know you’re in love with “gatekeeping” based on your old running credentials, but the fact that AJ Acosta didn’t run well in the steeple is irrelevant: the question isn’t whether Young will excel in the steeple, it’s whether it could ruin his season. The first time AJ Acosta ran the steeple in college was May 2010, and the following 2 months were the best of his running career, with a 2nd place in the NCAA 1500 (Wheating-Acosta-Centrowitz Duck sweep), and 3:36 and 3:53y clockings in July.

There is no "gatekeeping" going on here, certainly not by me. The only thing I offer here is experience, real experience. ..... The only gatekeeping I hear is based on your non-existent running credentials. It's your leitmotiv.
AJ Acosta's failure is very relevant, especially considering I've always encouraged people to give the event a shot. You've never, ever, not even once heard me discourage anyone not to try the steeplechase. There is not secret hand-shake, no dues, no nothing. It's not for everyone. Everyone doesn't get to run the steeple. Everyone gets to try... if they want. Or even if they dare. Just have some humility and try. Humility goes a long way. That's the best anyone can hope for.
FWIW, he ran that steeple on April 9th. Just sayin'.
