They died alongside the American road race scene. A runner could make a decent living “road whoring” back in the 80s and 90s. In the early 2000s, the prize money went away in favor of charity events. Ed’s and race founders sold their events to corporate interests, and most of the marquee races became local hobby joggers celebrations. This has only become worse with influencers, ShoeTubers, six star clout seekers, etc. Even prestigious marathon races are now catering to the lowest common denominator.
Track meets are very selective and offer no money to the up and comer. Shoe deals are low dollar or gear only. Youngsters have to take a vow of poverty or quit in order to survive. I do miss the days where a couple of podium finishes each month and 20 hours of bartending an week allowed me to live a chill lifestyle.
