Today marks 500 days until the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships in Budapest in 2026 and WA has announced some key information, including which events will be held on which days and who will qualify.
They have spread the finals around pretty well but one issue I have is that the men's 800 and 1500 are both on the final day. The 5000 is on day 1 (presumably, Jakob will try the double), and if Wanyonyi wants to run the 800/1500 double, WA should try to make it happen. They could pretty easily switch the 800 to day 1 if they wanted.
As for the fields, WA has said the following athletes will qualify automatically:
-All 2024 Olympic champions
-All 2025 world champions
-All 2026 Diamond League champions
The rest of the field will consist of "the best performers of 2026." I'm guessing WA will be going off world rankings to determine that, but it's possible they mean season's bests. Also, there's no limit on the number of athletes who can compete from the same country.
