If you want to talk about consistency Jess is the girl. I’m not sure I’m ready to put her ahead of Emma Bates but one of the top three Americans for sure.
Jess McClain has run 15:09 and 30:59 while marathon training in 2025. She also beat Dakotah at the half champs in March. She had a much better 2024 than Emma Bates.
I was shocked when she was not mentioned on the Let’s Run preview podcast.

Emma had a rotten 2024 but she ran really well at NYC half and knows the Boston course, that’s why I’m giving her the edge but I like Jess for number two (and who knows maybe higher!), especially if it warms up.
Happy for Jess! She is a hard worker, a smart racer and a very kind person. I’m super impressed with her success in the marathon. Shocked she wasn’t in any of the pre race previews, but she deserves to be!
Jess is coached by David Roche. So the main thing we know about her is she’s not anti-gay or whatever
I thought her whole mystique was being self-coached. Didn’t know that changed.
This was a recent change. I think it was because she wanted to train for various distances this spring (5K, 10K, half) leading into Boston, and wanted guidance structuring the changes. Looks like the coaching change really worked!
I think it’s because in every race she was never top American (or top three in the trials) she’s always been the first one out so I guess she wouldn’t get invite if it’s only 1-2 for the press stuff. Dakotah is an Olympian/12th and hates is the best American in Boston the past couple of years.
However, jess (and annie frisbee) should be in every conversation now. Hoping McClain runs the 10k on the track at usa’s too
And you mean she had many obligations to fulfill the contracts she has? I heard her say she was exhausted going into Monday. There are different expectations put on the big names on race weekend.
