In contrast, my brother was at Duke in the 80s. He was jogging at the track and witnessed Johnny Dawkins running a 4:14 mile for Coach K. ! I guess Duke had a better Interval pre-season program back then.

Over time, it gets faster. Wasn't it in the mid 4:30s?

I believe that some smaller point guards are capable of this in theory. Maybe even faster. But never from basketball fitness.

You aren't going to find very many high level point guards who have the genetic component of both incredible quickness and 4:14 endurance genetics.
I do know for a fact that at North Carolina, they had the players run a mile for fitness. In the '80s, Steve Hale (who was a guard) ran 4:44... So it stands to reason that with distance training he could have likely at least broken 4:30.
This settles a lot of the debates on just how fast high level athletes (who aren't distance runners) actually are.
These guys are very good basketball players...but they could not beat a decent middle school boys XC team in a race.
These are muscular men. The 5'10" equivalent of these player is 170 to 190 lbs. Terrible weight for distance. If they cut down to "ideal" distance weight and spent a year training specifically for distance they'd make a very good high school varsity squad.
But obviously their elite talent is explosiveness and speed. They'd never be elite distance runners.

Sure, they'd lose a mile to XC boys, duh.
800 gets a little closer, but they're still getting stomped by skinny boys.
Get down to the 400 and I wouldn't be too shocked if one or two of these guys were capable of 51ish. Maybe faster, maybe slower, but they're crushing a lot of middle schools boys over that one lap.
They are a reincarnation of The University of Arkansas teams under Nolan Richardson. 40 minutes of hell. I watched a 30-for 30 documentary on them. I recommend it.
I picked them to win it all in my bracket. I don't recall any time where I got the winner right before, I've had my chosen winner make the finals a few times but they didn't get the title. This just makes me like them even more. Bring it home, Cougars!
These are absolutely elite athletes. With that being said, I would be surprised on a track that the overall average of their team is sub 6:00. Half their roster is going to be forwards and centers, and there are going to be some guys running 6:40-7:00
I am going to go ahead and say these times aren't legit. Those guys, at the their size, aren't all running that fast. The slowest going 5:45? Naw, I'd have to see uncut footage of them running to believe that.

I love that anytime someone from another sport is kind of good at running, the JV-glory-days squad comes out in full force to cry fowl. Just because it was hard for you to run sub 6:00, doesn't mean it's that hard for everyone. These guys are likely 10 times more athletic athlete than most of us.
