Brazilian grad student is trying to run every single street in Chicago - Is this safe? Will he make it out alive?

The wife of one of the guys on The Running Public pod ran every street in Milwaukee. She did a lot of the ghetto areas in the winter when no one was out, or brought her husband with her.

That being said, running in bad areas around 8am on weekends is probably fairly safe, as it's not prime time for thugs.

There's an app for tracking it, Citystrides (it pulls info off Garmin or Strava activities).

No, it's not safe and the biggest threat is ICE nabbing and deporting him.

The real threat we should be concerned with is at the top. Word.

Man, I wanted to do this in Baltimore when I lived there and never had the cojones.

My biggest concern for him is doing so much running on hard surfaces. Not good for the knees.

Years ago, in the 1980s, I knew an avant garde alto sax player named Mark Reboul who told me he was going to walk every single street in Manhattan, all 13 miles. I don't know if he ever did it, and there was no social media back then. He wasn't interested in publicity. But that was his stated goal.

Even a moment's thought told me that he was, as it were, trying to learn the changes of a very difficult song--all the melodic threads, from stepwise chromatic scales through arpeggios and crazy leaps--that would take you through the chords.

Be careful on the southside of the city, place is warzone. A disgrace. People dying daily. For what? Nonsense. Politicians silent. BLM leaders too busy spending donations. Virtue signalers quiet. Mainstream media not interested. Shame

He’ll be fine if he takes very basic precautions. Specifically, run the sketchier neighborhoods in daylight hours and don’t show that he’s carrying a phone.

While there are occasional stray bullets, the vast majority of shootings are targeted, and I’ve never heard of a male runner getting mugged. If he takes the precautions above, there’s very little risk of either.

Still safer than running the streets of Brazil.

Some classic right wing fear mongering going on here. Yea, there are dangers in Chicago, but the biggest threat to this guy is getting nailed by a car or slipping on ice, not getting assaulted or shot on the street. He will just be the weird, skinny, Latino looking guy running through the 'hood and might get some looks or yells. Heck, he probably should be more worried about being deported on a student visa and getting sent to an El Salvadorian gulag.

This is accurate. Other than maybe getting heckled, which can happen in any neighborhood, this guy's going to be fine if he's running during daylight hours.

Their isn't a single large city in the world where something like this isn't risky. Even running on every street of the Vatican could be risky.

I would be worried about deportation more so.

I live in Philly which obviously isn't Chicago, but yeah he'll be fine. He's much more likely to get hit by a car than a victim of any crime. There's no reason to mess with someone running.

I spent a lot of time running in deep west philly too (think high 50s into the 60s, not university city). Worst that ever happened was some guy wanted to race me. Guess I saw a dead dog once.
