Solid predictions…I’m dropping Kerr down to 5th or 6th in the group

Short Sprints: Seville in the 100, Bednarek in the 200 and the group

Mens Long Sprints: Hudson Smith in the 400 and overall, Richards in the 200

Short Hurdles: Roberts in both, takes the category.

Long Hurdles: Dos Santos for the Double and the category

Short Distance: Arop in the 800, Nuguse in the 1500, Nuguse overall (but who knows)

Long Distance: Fisher for the double and the category

I’m revising my pick for the women’s short distance group to Welteji. I didn’t realize the scoring is 12-8-6-5-4-3-2-1. I thought it would be 10 points for first. With 12, the odds are stacked against winning a group without winning one of the races.

What happens if they have the same number of points?

That's the other reason it's difficult to win a group without winning a race. From the site: In the case of a tie for a Race Group's Slam Champion, the competitor with the highest individual finishing placement would win the Slam. If there is still a tie, the lowest combined time of both races for each competitor will be used to determine the winner.

So, as Rojo pointed out in the Let's Run GST preview show, someone finishing 1st and 5th would beat out someone finishing 2nd and 2nd.

Thanks. It seems like this would give a slight bias to specialists in the longer distances. It's easier to win by a larger margin in longer races.

Nice. I'm surprised to see that Asher-Smith is entered in the long sprint group. She would have been my pick to win the short sprint group.

Welteji needs to hold serve. She is 5-1 lifetime head to head outdoors at 1500 against Hiltz.

But in this format I could see some situational upsets. Hiltz is very gritty while Welteji always seems somewhat passive.

Welteji winning the 800 wouldn't shock me. That was her primary event for years. In 2022 she split time between 800 and 1500 before switching to 1500 in 2023.

I like your women's short distance pick. I think that possibility adds another element of excitement. Hopefully they have the technology set up to know the winner of the group as soon as all 8 finish the race.

Good call on Welteji's 800m background. Indeed, she finished 4th behind the Big 3 in that event at the 2022 world championships with a 1:57.02. She's definitely formidable in the 800.
