Hey everyone,
Looking for insight from anyone who’s dealt with this—or coached someone who has.
My 18-year-old son is a competitive distance runner (mostly 1600m (4:31) and 3200m (9:51)). He consistently goes white/pale during races, and then throws up uncontrollably afterward—sometimes multiple times. This happens even when he’s well-prepared and not visibly nervous. He races hard and leaves it all out there, but something seems off physiologically.
We’ve tried:
• Adjusting race-day nutrition and timing
• Hydration and electrolytes
• Pacing strategies
• Rest and recovery
• Even supplementation (e.g., magnesium, salt tabs)
Still, no change.
He had blood work done by his primary care doctor about a year ago, and nothing came back abnormal—no red flags with iron, B12, thyroid, or anything else standard.
The fact that he goes pale during the race and then vomits after makes me wonder if it’s something metabolic (lactate overload, vagal response?), GI-related, or possibly even heat/exertion sensitivity. It happens in the 1600 and 3200—even when pacing is conservative early.
We’re in the process of finding a sports medicine doctor who works with endurance athletes. Open to virtual/telehealth recs if anyone knows a good one.
Anyone dealt with this personally, or with an athlete? Any ideas or things to look into that helped?
Thanks in advance!
