Train with the EA guys and you will learn that this need for hydration is not needed. It is all a ploy by Camelback, Nathan, and bottled water companies to sell product.
Is there a need to strap 10 pounds of water to yourself increasing the stress load and potential for blisters from the straps?
or c. Someone that absolutely needs every piece of gear
No. Drop some water bottles on your LR routes if needed. The packs are perhaps the dumbest piece of equipment for anyone running in any semi-populated area

Why have ice cold water at your finger tips at all times on a 95 degree long run when you could just pre drive your route and stage hot water bottles...

Nope, not gonna drop bottles in the national forest. Nor along county roads. You run around suburban subdivisions if that gets it done for you. There are many people who can and do do more than that.
If you are running 70min or less or doing loops/repeats as a workout you probably don’t need one. When I’m off in the mountains for several hours I carry water and food. On really long days a water filter for additional water.
If you do a 4 mile loop then you can come around every 4 miles and grab a bottle
Or you could wear a backpack and have ice cold water whenever you want without ever breaking stride....
Yeah, but you also have to carry a backpack with you for the entire run - which forces you to alter your gait, makes you feel heavy and hot (ironically increasing the need for water) and ruins any chance you have of actually enjoying the run.

I thing you're confusing a camelback for a mobile home.
How does anyone carry a jumper or several in my case and coat etc? I'll carry water for anything more than 90 mins but never do a top up shop on a long run? (should say I don't drive though)
