I wanted him to hang on so bad! But hey he didn’t even know if he’d get to go and stuck his nose in it. Maybe he could’ve timed his kick differently, but he went for it!
It’ll prob hurt to miss out on the medals, but he should be really proud of that race and the season!
Glad he was able to go. There was some concern around whether he could go or not.
He wasn’t a well know athlete just a short while ago.
Training with Grant Fisher and being coached by Mike Scannell has made a colossal difference.
Great for our arm forces to have a guy competing on the world stage and almost medaling.
Way to go Sam Gilman - we salute you.
What a beast. Always a threat if he's in it with 400 to go.
Kyle Merber, give the people what they want:
SAM GILMAN as a GST Challenger
Awesome to see a former USAFA cadet at the professional level. Question though, does that mean he gets to delay his mandatory service?
He's been serving at Wright Pat AFB, he was recently picked up for the AF World Class Athlete Program, so he'll get to train full-time through the Olympics.

Really thought he had bronze. Outstanding effort…I know he’s got the service gig but imagine if he got to train with Scannell and Grant full-time. And if Mikes lurking here, start recruiting Rocky Hansen now too ha.
No to Rocky
Yes to Mo Ahmed and or Shawn McGorty. For whatever reason these two guys stay with Jerry at sea level as second stringers to U of O athletes. Jerry cares about income streams not Mo and Shawn

It is so funny to me that the US military has its own athletics program do other militaries have this?

Unorthodox approach, but:
McGorty has made 3 major USA outdoor teams in the last 3 years (2022 10, 2023 5 and 10K) on arguably the hardest team in the world to get on.
Ahmed's an Olympic and WC medalist, 4th this year in one of the deepest 10K's in Oly history, ran sub 27, sub 13, and most importantly, always seems prepared and fit when it really matters.
Dont see obvious motives for either to switch their training. At this point in their careers, I doubt either possesses the untapped talent that Fisher had.
Yes, other countries use their militaries and police or other public service jobs to pay athletes. Some countries don’t even make them do anything except run…they just say they have a public service or military job when they really just get paid to run.
Yes. The Kenyan armed forces and police both have excellent teams and often have their runners make the Kenyan National Team.
The Kenyan Armed Forces have a strong running team, known as the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), which participates in various events, including the Armed Forces Championships and the Africa Military Games, showcasing the athleticism and discipline of Kenyan military personnel.
Elite Athletes: The KDF boasts elite athletes who have achieved success in various distances, including Private Vincent Mutai, Private Gladys Koech, and Senior Sergeant Hellen Obiri.
Congrats to Sam and thanks for all the support for his career. He bit off on an aggressive race plan which paid big dividends. Not sure many people would have thrown his name around a few short months ago but he ran great; very happy for him.
Yes, I read these boards and enjoy the discussions (for the most part) but don't get to post much.
Cheers from China and congrats again Sam. You deserve it.

For those who may have missed it, Sam was accepted last month into the AF's WCAP.
He is now living in Park City & being coach by Mike Scannell.
Which, appears to mean he has dropped his prior sponsorship w/New Balance and has parted ways with Team New Balance Boston coach Marc Coogan.
First WCAP race for Sam coming up this Saturday (5/24) in the elite 1500 @ Sound Running Track Fest.
So, indeed, Grant has found his full-time training partner.
