This is big news. Gerald Phiri is a two-time Olympian for Zambia. He's also the head coach at Montverde Academy in Florida -- where he coached sprint phenom Issam Asinga in 2023. Asinga ran 9.89 that summer to break the world U20 record in the 100 before he was suspended for testing positive for the banned substance GW1516.
The press release says that three athletes that Phiri coaches have tested positive for GW1516 between July 2023 and August 2024 -- one of them obviously being Asinga.
It also says Phiri is being charged with three separate anti-doping rules violations. One for possession GW1516 while he was still an athlete in 2018 and 2019, one for possessing meldonium as a coach in 2024, and one for providing false and inaccurate information during the AIU-USADA joint investigation into his case.
Previously Asinga has said he tested positive due to contaminated Gatorade gummies he was given after being named Gatorade Athlete of the Year in 2023.
