But his parents are from Ethiopia

You're thinking of another runner, I believe Teffra's from Fresno, CA. It says so on his Georgetown Hoyas bio.
His speed is even more enigmatic than Nuguse...just kind of teleports to the line lol

I think you’re thinking of Tinoda Matstata.
Kid went to Central High in Fresno. Sr. Year ran 4:14.79 at State meet for 15th place in a 16 man prelim.
He improved.

He competed at U.S. Trials last summer.

that was his junior year; he was a senior in 2020, so he never ran senior year outdoor times.
I'm assuming he walked on to the Georgetown team with the 4:14? He probably would've gotten scholarship in years past. I wonder if Nuguse has inspired the new class of diaspora Ethiopian runners, I saw Tewalt also go for it in the 3000m. Haven't seen this many Ethiopians at the top level in America ever really, only ones that come to mind are Meb (Eritrean yes), Harun Abda, and Hassan Meade.
4:14 as a junior in 2019 was still pretty good. He beat the crowd of crazy times we are seeing these days. Gtown doesn't really do a lot of walk-ons anymore, so I would guess he probably started on 50% for 2 years and got bumped up from there.
I wonder what Teffra will run outdoors this season. Last year, he ran 3:36 but didn’t make it to outdoor nationals (finishing third to last in his heat), which suggests he had a subpar season. He also didn’t advance past the first round at the U.S. trials. However, he looked incredibly strong last weekend, both in the prelims and the final. Not to mention his pr is only 3:52 and he made a 3:53 look that smooth. With Strand, Martin, and Green in the mix, it seems like Teffra has a shot at winning the outdoor title. He’s really fast over the last lap and got to be in like 3:34 shape right now. Thoughts?

I think liam murphy can win. He's underperformed at the last couple championships but outdoor he will get it right. Or maybe his teammate marco, he's really good also.
He was on financial aid
