A 30x30' turf-covered treadmill set to world record 5k pace. Last man standing at the front of the treadmill wins, scored 1-8. Place it in the middle of the infield with pole-vault mats around it, performed as the final infield event of the first night.
Slow, boring, not spectator friendly, way too redundant as there's already a 3000. Needs to go.
Yeah. Let’s just get rid of all the distance races. 5000 has to go, I mean we already have the 3000. And then the 3000 has to go, I mean we already have the 1500. Which then makes no sense to race the 1500, I mean we already have the 800.
Cute, but your facetious “all or nothing” response manages to miss the point! I mean, much as I agree that an indoor distance race needs to go, I also believe that an indoor sprint event needs to go (for example, 55/60m are short to the point of redundancy). It’s all about balance, my friend.
They need to get rid of the 200/400/800 also. Bring back the 500/1000. replace the 5000m with a 4x1600 and the 200 with a sprint medley. Make indoor something that feels a lot different than outdoor.
Why run the 200? We already run the 60 & 400 Why do the triple jump? We already do the long and high jump Why do the weight throw? We already throw the shot

Real idea that I tried to submit to the coaches convention (boss was horrified and wouldn’t let me).
Get rid of the 5k indoors. Add a half marathon at nationals. You can only enter the half marathon if you have been to the first round in the 5k or 10k or were all region in XC (for super freshmen that are long distance, think Luke Puskedra). Also accounts for injury, two chances to make it. MAKE IT WORTH DOUBLE POINTS TOP 16 score.
1. Worth 20 points, even USC men will pick up a Japanese grad student to run 62 mins.
2. Maybe the US will get good at the marathon if we have 100 kids lining up for a half every winter.
3. roll off the half right into 10k season.
This will be ignored as not a real suggestion but I am serious.

And why have the 800? We already have the 400, which is of course, 2 laps. Cut the 800 too!

They don't contest the 200m at worlds btw.
Your second example doesn't work. The long and high jumps are fundamental; the triple jump seems arbitrary - it needs to go.

There is a lot to be said for this but it would be an added pain to host. And a 100 athlete field is like 5 events worth of athletes.
People who whine like this should be forced to watch a marathon on the track. A women's marathon so it takes longer.
Good idea, but would it be like a normal marathon where hundreds, or thousands, are lined up at the start line? Maybe the whiners should have to watch a non-binary indoor marathon, because the field would be smaller and the times might be even slower.

A half marathon is not a bad idea, however athletes should be allowed to qualify from road races. 5k indoor time and half marathon times should be the only ways to qualify.
Of course this will limit the number of hosts, especially if this half marathon coincides with indoors. You need to shut down miles of road, get police support, etc. - maybe a crit course on a campus would work. There is a chance that conditions will be miserable for a half marathon in march - it could be 3 degrees and snowing at the site of indoor nats.

Or they might be faster, if it’s all nonbinary men.
The 5000 is more aerobic and a different test of fitness. You can be less talented and have a better chance of performing in the 5000m than the 3000m or mile. I say keep it.
