Good for the coach to admit he was sorry, but for this type of repeated behavior I am surprised that all the parents and athletes still supported him. I mean, maybe once was an accident, but if it happened multiple times it was most likely on purpose.

According to Ohmuta High School in the Fukuoka Prefecture city of Omuta, it was learned in February following a report to the prefectural government that a teacher in his 50s slapped a student during a training camp last summer, causing a bloody nose.

The school suspended the teacher from March 1, and conducted a survey of students in the running club, which revealed three other cases of corporal punishment. Details such as the dates and times of them were not disclosed. The head coach admitted to the acts, saying, "I am sorry."

The teacher submitted a resignation letter, which was accepted by the school. However, club members and guardians expressed their desire for the head coach to continue teaching on the condition that he does not use corporal punishment, so the school will reportedly allow the man to work as a part-time club activity instructor and support staff, assisting in practice sessions and escorting students on race trips.

Hisayuki Fujiyoshi, a board member of the school, said, "Corporal punishment is unacceptable, but he regretted what he did, so we allowed him to be involved as an instructor after having him submit a written pledge."

Ohmuta High School has participated in the national high school ekiden relay race 43 times and won it five times.

We almost need to draw a distinction between the western West (USA) and the eastern West (Europe) when it comes to this stuff. The US may have invented the current form of "wokeness" and sent it out into the world, but a lot of European countries have a fatal case of it that makes the US look downright sensible by comparison. Americans aren't (yet?) being visited by the police over tweets, for example. Somehow when wokeness crosses an ocean it mutates into a more virulent strain. In 10 years the US might have more in common with Japan than with Europe, at least as far as the approach to wokeness and sensitivity and so forth is concerned.

Corporal punishment is for consenting adults.

I taught in Japan for many years and often received essays from students describing their most influential teacher as a coach who physically assaulted them. They would often say that the assault showed them that the coach loved them, (cared for them) In retrospect it was always described as a positive thing.

I was physically abused by my parents as a kid. Lots of physical violence. All 4 of my siblings (older brother had it the worst.)

Absolutely screwed up our relationships with them and with understanding what healthy dynamics look like. Took me years of therapy to recover. It’s an odd thing to both love and fear/loathe your caregiver.

physical abuse as a coach, or anyone else, i find absolutely repulsive.

but maybe this is a product of being conditioned to be way to soft.

i lived in asia in a variety of social settings, the think you notice is how happy the kids are, and small kids almost never cry. the parents, aunties, you seldom see them doing corporal punishment, but they give them a good wack from time to time, as if it is more the proper way, and no big deal.

from that perspective, as a person, and it's known if you do A, then B happens, pretty much automatically, and nothing personal.

so i base the right and wrong, not on the theory of it all, but the results.

the Japanese parents and kids vote for the coaches way, and if i was a kid, in the group, thinking the coach knew best, and getting a wack here and there was for the best, i think i'd buy in, and not a big deal, a character building thing.

i support the coach and parents. and say to all the western moral people, how are your kids behaving, do they eat garbage, so they have any respect?

the answer is that the west has lost its way. and generally have lousy results, and pie in the sky ideas.

Isn't mental health absolute sheeeit in those Asian countries? Nets around factories to make sure the workers survive that deadly fall and all that fun? And leave it to rojo to get almost nothing right about this story and simply just not ever come back when it was obvious he was wrong.

Their mental health is probably no worse than that in the US..

We had a 5th grade teacher who used to punish us with a wooden paddle. It hurt. At the end of the year we all signed it. Looking back, the teacher's behavior was weird. But that's how things were in the early 70s. Did it scar me? No. But was it right? No way.

Does anyone get their mouth washed out with soap anymore? That happend when I was a kid I believe but never to me.
