Which SEC school cut athletes and pulled scholarships today?

No one was cut today that will happen at the end of the semester.

The reality is there is a lot of dead weight in our sport. For years it’s been used as an accounting tool for the athletic department to balance numbers, graduation, APR, GPA.

Those days are gone. Goodbye massive rosters where the back half work your Highschool meet and run at the home meets.

What school or schools did this?

Schools will have to downsize, no way around it. This is NCAA mandated, as a result of the House settlement.

In regards to scholarship, they are written for four years, but can be written with specific years set to zero (or any other number). Athletes need to know their contract specifics.

If they have money on their contract guaranteed, a school has to honor it, if they stay enrolled. A school would not have to keep said guy on the team though.

It’s incredible to me that athletes who have qualified for conference and have a majority of their eligibility left are getting cut. There’s a good and bad way to go about these roster caps, and so far the coaches that are preemptively downsizing seem to get the logistical side correct (let people get in the portal asap, be transparent etc.), but utterly fail in the team and personal aspect. There’s multiple top 10 teams ruled by a culture of fear that puts these coaches on a pedestal where they can do no wrong. God bless to these kids

Cuts have certainly happened. Athletes will likely have their scholarships honored through the end of the year but there have been programs in more conferences than the SEC, that have issued out roster cuts. It will be a tough bullet for power 5 kids to bite when they realize that their best bet is to transfer to a mid major/d2/3 school.

Would be nice if this site followed the developments of this situation more. Maybe even put together a list of schools that do NOT opt in. The new deadline is now in June from my understanding.

The poster updated it's a husband/wife duo so I think that narrows it down. And that the cuts were immediate and athletes told to clear out their lockers.

Somebody is not telling the truth. The SEC requires 4 year scholarships and athletes who get cut due to scholarship limits will continue their scholarships.

Athletes will keep scholarship but will not be on the roster. If they enter the portal the coach can immediately cut aid.

technically scholarships are year to year. some schools carry hurt or disappointing runners. some tell you to hit the bricks.

Depends on how the scholarship is written. Most scholarship agreements specify an award amount for each year for four years (i.e 2024-2025: 50%). Some schools zero them out after the first year so they aren’t on the hook, but the athlete knows that when they sign it. Other times it’s flat across the board or even increases. They can’t cut their scholarship unless they enter their name in the portal. Most schools will cut athletes from the roster and then hope they put their name in the portal so their get their money back. There is always the chance that the athlete stays at the schools and just collects their money until they graduate.
