LRC “interviews” Shelby about burrito defense and doping

I don't know what they are but it isn't a journalist. Journalists uncovered the Pentagon papers and did real, deep, in estigative work over months. They didn't softball questions and then take the State Departments word for it

ill answer your question with a question: do you think Shelby doped?

Exactly this.

(1) They go out of their way to defend Shelby from the jump

(2) they never try to consider any of the other facts or find facts that doesn’t support this initial defense

(3) they “interrogate” Shelby after her ban is lifted but were never going to think anything but what they always thought: that she’s innocent

I don't think the interview brought out any new info. It's all been said or not said. Questions were fine, but I would say Rojo was quite leading with some of them. "you said this and they thought this, but you really meant that, right?"

other than that it was fine, just didn't really learn anything new. She seems like a nice person, and really loves running.

I've said it before in another thread. I'm not a fan, but i appreciate the way she loves running, when some of our more talented runners carry on as if they were burdened by god to be so talented in something so awful.

It's not out to everyone but I can only imagine how it's going to go.

It's very clear the running media, letsrun included has decided to back her at all costs for whatever reason.

It's also clear that majority of the fanbase thinks she's a cheat, and the media failed to move them.

It doesn't seem to matter to the pro runners who race her.

This cheat served a harsh ban. it cut into the prime of her career. She'll likely be re-signed by Nike but as most of the fanbase doesn't believe her, I don't think she'll be much of a moneymaker for them.

the media will continue to give her space to whine about how the ban was unfair, changing the goal posts on that. At first the ban was unjust because they refused to accept her ridiculous story. Then she acknowledged it was ridiculous herself, so she moved the goalposts to the ban being ridiculous because they only gave her seven days and all the onus was on her. I think seven days is enough and of course the onus is on the athlete to prove themselves!

So, all in all, it is what it is. She's back, the media won't ask her a single critical question and we are where we are.

In the last FIVE years the media did ZERO investigative journalism on Joe Biden's severe mental and physical decline. Now they're going apeshat over Trump who was seen limping. You have no reason to complain about the Brojo's journalism, or lack of.

I thought the interview was great. You can disagree. But it's rare for an athlete to answer 30+ minutes about a suspension. Yes, we weren't grilling her nonstop but we did challenge her on facts - hell Jon even made her give him the name of the charity she said she gave some prize money to.

When I think of Shelby I think of this.

Question for Jonathan and the Johnson Brothers:

Yesterday, Weldon did a story on Heather MacLean’s 1500 meter world record and the sub-headline was:

”Drug cheat Regina Jacobs’ record from 2003 erased”

Then, in the first paragraph of the story says she broke “ the long-standing American record of 3:59.98 from convicted doper Regina Jacobs”

You guys typically use these adjectives when you mention athletes who received a ban. Yet, the title on the homepage about the Shelby interview was simply “Shelby Houlihan Speaks to LRC.”

And when Alicia Monson broke Shelby’s 5000 meter American record in 2023 you simply said she ran “…14:19.45 to break Shelby Houlihan’s 14:23.92 American Record…”

So, when will you start using these adjectives with Shelby, or conversely, treating those athletes like you treat Shelby?

Case and point.

Both Shelby and Regina tested positive for PEDs

both served suspensions

Yet Shelby is treated with a massive presumption of innocence by you and Regina is called a cheat.

Why are they different to you>

If an athlete has denied doping in a court do we expect them to admit it in an interview?

You can choose to believe what she says or not. But the decision of a court stands.
