How long until Nico Young wins a medal?

Odds are still against him ever winning a global outdoor medal, but he definitely has a chance and 2027-2029 is the most likely timeframe.

I just use the green text thing to make dumb people upset tbh. I'd say it's a troll, but I'd defend the statements, so it's more just being provocative. #1 Coffee Club fan, #1 Sean Brosnan fan, #1 Trump Hater, etc. Been thinking about switching to #1 Tuohy fan until she makes her first team, but Trump just keeps topping himself with worse thing after worse thing.

It could also be because I strive to make a substantial portion (10-25%) of my posts outlandish/arrogant/smug/be provocative in some way. Just the brand I try to cultivate. I want to have a good enough reputation that most people will at least consider my argument, while people still know I'm dead wrong and stupid sometimes. I like to push on the edges of the overton window to see where the limits really are (although Nico Young winning a medal doesn't seem like the craziest thing after today). Plus some stuff is hyperbole, like obviously Nico Young isn't gutting out 12:51 5ks on 6:00 mile fitness, I was just pointing to the idea that he has the mentality to be a champion.

Nico is impressively tough and fast.

Unfortunately for Nico, Fisher is 7sec faster over 5k and 22sec faster over 10k and he got bronze in those events. Fisher has the better kick. Nico has ground to make up before a global medal is a reasonable ask. I'd love to see him get there, but it is not likely this year.

The problem is that he isn't fast enough to run away from the field and he hasn't developed an elite kick. He really doesn't have a path to victory yet.

But let's remember that nobody thought Rupp would ever medal due to his weak kick. Then he outkicked both Bekeles and matched Farah stride for stride down the home stretch at the 2012 Olympics. Young trains with Rupp. Magic could be happening as we speak.

Peach Pit, just a hunch, but in front of his home crowd in LA in 2028, I like Nico’s chances best in the marathon. He’s got the classic grit, build, and range. A medal in 2:02-2:03 something. Maybe he even pulls off a Joanie in honor of her incredible 1984 feat in LA and wins from the front in an audacious ball-busting move, like he did to win Nike Nationals.

Agreed. Fisher is better now, and Fisher is more likely to medal this year than Nico. But Nico is much further along in his development at age 22 than Fisher was at that age. Nico's current PBs are 3:34, 7:37, 12:51, and 26:52. Fisher's PBs at the same age were 3:39, 7:39, and 13:29 (with no 10k mark). In the year Nico finished college, he made the U.S. Olympic team, and he was the 3rd-fastest 5k guy and 2nd-fastest 10k guy in the country. In the year Fisher finished college, he was the 18th-fastest 5k guy in the country.

Nico's recent PBs show he is still progressing, despite the various hiccups he's had this winter. There's a good chance he can run sub-12:50 and sub-26:40 this year if he gets in fast races. That strength combined with his 3:50 mile speed would make him formidable. If he continues to progress and avoids getting bit in the leg by dogs, I like his medal chances starting in 2027.

I agree, but the NCAA is also much better now (in terms of times) and I think the shoes play a huge role. Fisher also wasn't training that much in college - I think he peaked at about 70-80 mpw and 5 miles of workout volume. I also think it's almost a certainty Fisher worked harder academically and obviously wasn't at altitude either.

I think he might medal once in his career but has a decent shot at doing so. But it'd have to go all right - a good Ethiopian or Kenyan (or Ugandan) gets injured, one runs tactically terribly, and the pace is in such a range that it's not a pure fitness test but it's also not so slow either - I think a race like this year's or a bit slower (winning time 26:45-55) would be good for him in a couple of years, a fast close off a fast but not super fast pace.

But the upside for him is that he's basically a lock for US teams for the next few years, and probably won't have to peak for it either - just a down week.

You are generally a very good poster but this is just weird. What exactly do you hope to accomplish by “cultivating a brand” on LRC? The best posters are genuine and consistent and therefore the most respected. You are a young guy-go for a run and socialize with people your age a bit. Plenty of time for you to be the old dude living on Let’s Run.

I think the comparison with Fisher really just shows what an enormous jump Fisher made out of college, and good for him in doing so. I think it has in part inspired other collegiate runners to believe they can also reach the same level. Nico has always been earmarked as a great talent, I would suspect his peak time may end up not too far from Fisher's but honestly at this stage of their careers could not tell you who will end up with the faster PBs. In a championship race though it seems Fisher so far has it all put together better but I thought Nico closed his 12:51 the other night really strong which bodes well for him.

Realistically, he'll win many medals at US champs, it's really hard to see him medaling on the world stage but as others have said it just takes an off day for some runners and it can happen. Us speculating is a good sign that at least there's a chance - but so hard to be concrete atm when everyone is putting out world class times.

2027-28 feels about right. Rupp's rise was similar, got into the Beijing squad at a similar age and got great experience there, made teams in the meantime and then got his first medal at London at a similar age to what Young will be in LA. Of course Young has to deal with something Rupp didn't, the very real possibility that he won't even be the top American 10k guy at his second Games. Then again, Rupp didn't win the '08 Trials either but was clearly our top guy by his second Olympics, so anything's possible.

Go to a few worlds, get in the top 10, top 5 then progress to a medal contender.

Fisher, Hobbs, Nuguse all did that. The main exception would honestly be Kenneth Rooks, but Steeple is a bit of an odd race. He did get 10th in 2023 worlds.
