I picked Berkeley because UCLA wouldn’t offer the same academic experience esp for the majors I ended up choosing (Business and CS). I also liked the idea of seasons and being so close to Silicon Valley. I cannot stress how much better Cal is for me!!
Cal hasn't really cared about sports in a long time.
UCLA... as it climbed the ladder of academic prestige decided that being indifferent about sports was what the elite schools did... so they followed. The problem UCLA has is that there are too many random people who care about UCLA basketball.. that they still have to put an emphasis on basketball and I guess men's volleyball... outside of that... maybe water polo? maybe softball?... They don't care about any other sports anymore.
Because they are in Cali... in some sports they can be representative or even good without much effort. UCLA popped up with at great women's soccer team a couple of years ago... but when they are good at something these days... it is almost by accident.

UCLA cares more about being pro Palestine than they do at having good athletes. They have dropped in rankings as a school due to DEI. The track team is at a rock bottom and I don’t see things changing anytime soon.
Coaching is bad. Being a distance fan makes me throw up just thinking about it. The CAL coach is one of the worst coaches in the business. These schools must not care to be good anymore.
USC saw the writing on the wall long ago and dropped men's xc & distance. They barely put anything into women's XC. Just not a good place to attract runners between the air quality and paved surfaces all around campus.
As for Cal, they have an adversarial faculty that fights any athletic spending or growth of resources. This is why they were left out of the exodus to the Big 10.
It comes down to coaching, you should be able to put together national qualifying teams from just California kids alone each year if you're a halfway decent coach.

Coach Hayes is showing to be a disaster of a pick for UCLA. They are pathetic in everything from cross country to sprints in track. Cal has had the same hire for a while now. They just don’t care.
UCLA invented the Internet and with USC and Cal Tech did Supersonic Flight, Apollo 11, Mars Rover, etc.
Cal in mainly L.A. students. Cal invented Nuclear Ignition which is the Greatest Scientific Breakthrough in Human Existence.
But they can't seem to get 5 guys into a van to show up at a cross country meet.
This is a combination of bad coaching and really bad management. I know there have been other threads on this situation, but how was this allowed to happen.
Cal has 3:57 miler and 7:53 3k, I wouldn’t say that’s as bad as yall are making it out to be
Gran transfer and 7:56 . Nice try defending and this awful distance coach. No one will go to NCAA yet another year. They didn’t make one distance final at big 10’s, men or women. This is truly hard to watch as an Alum. WTF is going on. They never have coaching retention and it’s now making sense why.
