Oh, please, spare us the drama—people clutching their pearls over Owen Powell burning out because his parents are big-shot coaches can shove it. This kid’s only slogging through a pathetic 50 miles per week, which is basically a casual jog for anyone serious. If you think that’s gonna break him, you’re as clueless as he is pampered. Famous parents or not, he’s coasting, not crumbling. Get a grip.

Mile Per Week is always a pointless data, means nothing without comparing how "hard" the athlete is going (which is honestly hard track when recording yourself, and really unknowable between athletes), and the total amount of exercise (warmup/cooldowns not included, how much stretching and drills, how much other sports/etc?)

XC skiers and swimmers train for hours every day as teenagers and they don't "burn out".

My HS coach told us training was only 1/3 of the picture. 1/3 training (workouts, running, lifting), 1/3 recovery (sleep), 1/3 preparation (hydrating, eating healthy).

I'd bet that his parents have him getting enough sleep and eating a healthy diet, along with raising him to have a very good work ethic in everything he does. As coaches, I'd be shocked if a lot of those things didn't just rub off on him as a consequence of raising him. Most people don't realize how rare it is in this country to just eat healthily and sleep well. Just like how Owen didn't realize how strange it was to go to Hayward every weekend. They're also making plenty of money (I think a combined $400k or so iirc). Something people brought up about the NP kids a lot (especially the Youngs) is how their parents made them 3 healthy meals every day, and they were very strict about getting to bed early. People vastly underestimate how much of a difference that makes.

I'll also say that while the Powells may not have any input into Owen's training, they surely still have a decent idea of what he's doing. They'd certainly step in if Owen's training was getting him injured, or was like only like 20mpw of intervals for 5k XC. But no need to fix what isn't broken.

Better to have a 9/10 coach while getting 10/10 recovery and fueling, than to have a 10/10 coach, but get 4-6 hours of sleep most nights (like me in HS lol), eat tons of ultra-processed foods, and drink more soda than water.

People equate the mileage count with the 'hardness' of the training plan. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I did a low mileage balls to the wall program in high school in the late 80s, then went to college and tried to scale that up to 50mpw and was permanently overtrained, and never improved. Even that didn't injure me, I just sucked. Sucking is what burned me out. I can't imagine how amazing it would have felt to have done twice as much running but at speeds that didn't leave me broken. And I would have improved a lot more.

My child is running twice as much mileage as I did and improving at an astonishing rate. She never reports being tired, always says "I feel amazing". The difference is the large majority of those miles are scaled back into recovery or shakeout pace and even the workouts aren't anywhere near 100%. Some of her teammates did half the training during the winter and are now coming to practice and cooking themselves in every run because my daughter's recovery pace is now their tempo pace, and they have to keep up for ego reasons. They imagine that her program is insanely hard when most of the time she's on the treadmill watching a TV show and barely breaking a sweat.

The amount of mileage needs to be looked at in the context of how fast those miles are being run. I know super old people and fat people who put in twice the mileage as most high schoolers who are never injured and burned out. People have to stop being afraid of training. Even with all the running my daughter is doing (around Powell's mileage), it's only about an hour a day of exercise.

I'd be shocked if they didn't actually have any conversations with his coach or with him about training and racing. What, would they not answer if he asked them how to approach a big race? They probably bring their athletes to altitude camps. Wouldn't he come along with them? Wouldn't he have soaked up vast amounts of wisdom about training and racing from family conversations, even ones between the parents at the dinner table? Didn't he watch many UO/UW practices and meets over the years? But even without all that, you'd expect him to be really good at the sport with a father who ran 4:02 in an era where only a handful in the country broke 4:10 ever year and a mother who is also talented, and so he is.

I don't think the mileage count itself is important, every activity should serve some purpose, but aerobic conditioning is a highly important piece that most people don't address and think they can get away with underdoing. Then you can see it in their results as they have a pretty good 400/800 time, a mile that is passable, a bad 3200m, and awful XC times.

I don't think Powell should be looking at it like, "hey I'm running 3:56 on 50mpw, let me bump it up to 70mpw and get 3:52". 50mpw is enough to support what he's doing. But I also don't think he'd be running 8:04 for 3000m or 13:30 at Woodbridge if he was doing 30mpw. There is a point where the aerobic conditioning is just right, and he seems to be on it right now. In college if he picks up the 5000m, he'll have to do some more.
