One of my top 5 movies. Eastwood, Freeman, Hackman was an all star lineup. English Bob was a notable minor but magnificently portrayed as the royal superior that was quickly educated of American divorce pain from the King.
What a talent Hackman was.
MS. TESSMACKER!!!! Lex Luthor rendition was great. Quick and the Dead character was good as well. Obviously, The French Connection was his best but LOVE Ghosts of Mississippi.

Sad news. Not many actors have a better filmography over the past 60 years.
My favorite Gene Hackman movies:
#1 The Conversation
A masterpiece in every aspect and Hackman's best.
#2 Hoosiers.
With this one, Hackman's character essentially became the template of an entire genre.
#3 Superman
Hackman is to super hero villain as Sean Connery is to James Bond. Hackman being his most Hackmanish.
#4 The Quick and The Dead
Ok most would laugh at me ranking this higher than Unforgiven, but this is wildly more entertaining. Hackman is so fun in it.
#5 Unforgiven
Unquestionably a great movie. This gets bumped down for the Hackman's character's decisions at the end for being completely nonsensical.
#6 Bonnie and Clyde
I wish I could have seen a spinoff movie of the Hackman character.
#7 No Way Out
Less of a Hackman movie, but showcases how just Hackman's presence can up the suspense and thrill level.
#8 The French Connection
I'd think this is the only movie that one can argue is a better Hackman movie than The Conversation. Hackman is fine in it, the movie just underwhelms me every time.
#9 Superman II
Hackman steals every scene he is in, despite his character not even really needing to be in this.
HM: The Firm, Enemy of the State, Downhill Racer, The Replacements, Heist
I was less of a fan of Get Shorty and The Royal Tenenbaums.

He was definitely one of the greats. He may have been in some bad movies but he never gave a bad performance. I gather he'd been in poor health for some time now, and was 95, so his death isn't entirely surprising, but that his much younger wife & his dog died certainly is troubling. Hopefully just a tragic accident rather than some kind of foul play. In any event, R.I.P.
Hackman was so good in so many movies. He had a tough role as leading man in that he wasn't the most attractive guy, so sometimes the romantic plot points felt forced. Hoosiers is a great example of that challenge. They should have just left the romance angle out of that movie altogether. It never made much sense. Old loner, younger spinster, hate each other, randomly start kissing... Not his fault though, he deserved 100 Oscars for that role.
