I stopped caring at 29. So probably around then. Just moved onto the next phase in life. Still exercise regularly, but that is where I stopped training.
M66.5 here. As of the Fall '24 was still under all 3 bars. The goal for the upcoming season is the same. However, these 3 are of different difficulty. 20/5k seems the easiest to make and 40/10k - the hardest (IMHO).
I got two out three last year before I voluntarily walked away from competitive racing last June. My last race was an 18:01 5k at age 64. Two weeks before that I ran a HM in 1:25:38 also at age 64. Didn't quite get the sub 40 at last falls Turkey Trot 10k with a 40:37 with my new training plan of about 20 mpw running, 60 of biking and about 10 mpw of walking.
I'm running a 10k this June so maybe I'll get my sub 40 there, or not. Only because I won a free entry at last year's race!

You ran 18:01 and 1:25 and did not break 40 minutes? You must have been near 40 minutes for some 10k stretch in your HM

Ahhh... Good point. I'll have to go back and check my splits to see if I did break 40 during the race!
After my last race in June, I dropped my mileage from 55 to 20 mi a week, no speed work, and no long runs. Which probably attributed to only running 40:37 in November. But I was okay with that because I vowed to never train hard to race fast ever again!...50 years of this was enough.

How old are you now? Some guys stop mid- late-20s for a decade and then have a decade of hard running/racing.
