Tired of all these phone addicted zoomers running sub 4 miles thinking they are elite when really that’s a 408 mile in 2012. Also grant fisher all of a sudden beating Bekele times by 5+ seconds and not having th humility to aknowledge the technology improvements is annoying.
i now identify as a sub 4 miler and sub 30 minute 10k guy with my 406 and 31 minute pbs.
The biggest star in athletics history, Bolt, competed during that period. Mo Farah, with 10 global golds and two Olympic doubles, isn't going to be forgotten, neither is Rudisha, the first man to run sub 1:41. This is also why in GOAT conversations it's titles and medals that matter more than times. Times are hard to compare between eras because of tech advances (shoes, tracks nutrition, sports science), but being the best, winning the top titles means the same in any era.

Tracks: tracks run on today existed before the times got insanely fast. They all existed. They all hosted big meets. They all had paced heats.
Nutrition: there is zero evidence that nutrition suddenly changed across all athletes at all levels globally, all around the same year. Additionally, you need to assume that this nutrition change only impacted middle distance and distance runners. Times in the sprints have not had the same step change in time improvement-- so just distance runners started eating better?
Training:there is zero evidence that training suddenly changed across all athletes at all levels globally, all around the same year. The only shred of evidence is the increase in double threshold training in some groups, but many groups are training with similar methodologies as they always have.
You point to these vague indirect things which you need to believe all suddenly occurred and started having immediate effect across the world of track at the same time in the same year-- coincidentally the same year that super shoes were released.

There are going to be 3:55 guys not making NCAAs, if those running 3:59 think they are truly elite they are mistaken.
Quit caring about times across eras. The one thing Bekele and Grant Fisher have in common is they both broke the indoor 5k record, Grant may have done it in a quicker time but they both still got the same accomplishment. Bekele destroys Grant in terms of all his other accomplishments (there is still time for Grant but I'm doubtful he matches that resume).

Well said. If anything the diet for young people has gotten worse and I don't think all these high schoolers are all of a sudden doing double threshold, but they're still breaking 4 in droves. It's the shoes.
Maybe the bicarb is making a difference too, but I have no idea how prevenient that is at the college/HS level, even if it obviously is with the pros.

If the world forgets about Donovan Brazier and Athing Mu and Walk The Moon and stops overrating them ; the names you listed are acceptable collateral damage.
While I think it would have been nice to give some kind of homage to Bekele and what his times meant from the earlier generations, he does acknowledge the controlled environment, including the bouncy track.

His silver at the London Olympics won't be forgotten soon.
Of course it depends on whether we're talking "track famous" or actually famous. Lots of American distance runners from Don Lash through the greats of the 50s, 60s, and 70s are "track famous" well known by LR super fans.
And Galen has proven to be a good commentator who could still be going strong in that field age 64. Frank Shorter had a long career doing that after his racing days.

Dude, just think of the 2012 Olympics: Rudisha, Mo, and Rupp. Those names were HUGE on these boards. And Kipchoge started killing it on the roads the next year.
And in 50 years, I still think Rudisha and Kipchoge will be remember by runners. Mo and Rupp less so because they never set world records or broke any specific time barriers.
Rudisha has the first 1:40 in history and Kipchoge has the first sub-2 (unofficial).

I was born at the right time. Lived my life with some second guesses and a couple regrets so far but Im getting much better and look forward to my future. I got over living in the past without forgetting and understand that change was occuring all along. Within the system we currently have, I can only go with innocent until PROVEN guilty but there within lies the problem. Who gets to decide the truth AND enforce it? WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN?
In the meantime, I do not want to return to bamboo poles, cinder tracks, wind up stop watches with little old lady librarians volunteering their time and poor eyesight/hearing/attention spans, sawdust pits, stretchy wet leather spikes, and on and on....Im glad to remember the stories and learn more about those who came before me while cheering on those of today and tomorrow. I want improvement and close competition for places first, times, distances and records second.
I learned a long time ago that cheaters were always a part of the game. Maybe the ancients had it right....banished and shamed for life, never to return home and family name erased forever. But todays society is a different kind of savage. Nothing new under the sun.
Fix that first. Trends come and go but truth and justice vs deception and evil intentions are forever.
