As crazy as Kiplimo's record was today, the craziest thing to me was, if these splits are accurate, his 5k-15k split was 26:09. This is faster than both the road and track 10k records. These are probably a bit off, but either way I don't think I have ever seen a race split this ridiculous in race ever.
No, his 5k to 10k split was (now) 26:33. I say “now” because the World Athletics recap has been edited and now reads “his 15km split was initially recorded as 39:47 before it was confirmed after the race as 40:07.”
He was drafting off the lead car. I wonder if WA will take that into consideration when verifying the record?
I didn't watch, but it's the lead/camera car's fault if it happened. They have full control over their speed and the runner's follow distance. I assume it happened because it's been mentioned a lot.
I wonder if that will be a case of rule breaking being accepted and then normalized, like how supershoes were technically against the letter of the rules in 2016 when Nike put them on Rupp, et. al. They couldn't exactly go back and nullify the Olympic Trials and Olympic results, so they had to rewrite the rules (numerous times) to make them OK. Future race directors will be motivated to provide lead car drafts to ensure fast times, and then it becomes normalized. . .

Some people say he ‘only’ drafted in the first half, and that that did not influence the result. Right. Look about 44 / 45 / 46mins into the race. There is a guy hanging out the roof of the lead car. Maybe the race director? He is waving his arms to Kiplimo to direct him left or right of the streets. Multiple times. He seems to be communicating with the driver too. Kiplimo sees it and follows the directions. Sometimes the car has a slightly bigger gap than a few meters, then slows down. Sometimes Jacob is not running directly behind the car, the cars steers right to correct it. Another time the runner - after a tight corner - swerves outwards, he then moves back in line with the car straight away, probably feels some wind. And so on.
Kiplimo is right, it is allowed, so why not? His record will count (*pending ratification for everything else of course) However, it is intentional from the part of the organisation , they want to ‘help’ him by creating the opportunity to draft. They are very well aware of the value of an exceptional time.
So questions about fairness and the spirit of the sport and rules and - in the end - credibility - have to be asked, or not?

This makes more sense, but is still pretty ridiculous. As fast as Fisher's track AR and only 10secs off the road 10k record (by a confirmed doper).

Something tells me you form a lot of your opinions solely based on whether or not someone has the same skin tone as you.
Are the lead car drivers drug tested? I suspect he was on a stimulant because his pacing and wind breaking for Kiplimo was astonishing. Very unfair! Also what kind of wheels were on the car? If the wheels were leeching rubber into the road, that could have made it bouncier just like those WR indoor tracks which were also built on conveyor belts. Not cool!
