Grant's 13.53 last 100 was the fastest 100 of the race from any competitor. And the race was on pace to 7:27 at 2K in. Both guys ran under 2:25 pace that last K and that's why they got it, squeeze plus a kick
What kind of kick are you expecting after running 7 minutes @3:58-9/mile pace??
I’d say a last 2 of 27.5 (3:41/mi) is a pretty good!
+ Grant and coach said last summer the key to the championship 10k kick is being the least tired when you get to the bell after running so hard for so long, not necessarily your top end speed. That’s what happened at Millrose just at a shorter, but much faster distance.
Maybe the split isn’t as flashy, but the kick was there

I've always been perplexed as to why races in which world records are set never seem to be those "sit and kick" type races...

This is a semantic debate, but I kind of agree with the OP. Not every increase in pace at the end of a race deserves to be called a "kick." If your last 100 is only 1 second faster than your average pace for the entire race, not a "kick" in my book. If a "kick" just meant a fastest last lap, the word would not be a useful descriptor since the last lap is basically ALWAYS the fastest, even if by only a small amount.
They both sped up and one person did it better. Outkicked seems right.
