This won't count for record purposes since it wasn't from the start, but his back-end 2k from yesterday was 4:53.81, which is over a second faster than lagats official record.

Incredible stat!
2000 4:54.74 Bernard Lagat (Nike) New York, New York 2/15/14
Still slower than Jim Spivey's 2000 4:52.44 (Athletics West) Lausanne, Switzerland 9/15/87
How much does its being the backend of a race matter? Missing the initial acceleration of starting from a standstill, but more impressive because of the effort prior

after a 228 1K, to put it into perspective.
to get Jacobs 717 there are 5 seconds to come off ... do the math on the front and back end..

4:53.83 by my math, for both Fisher and Hocker, which is not over a second faster than Lagat’s record.
Not impressed. Grant is not the runner that Lagat was. Super spikes, bouncy tracks and other stuff have ruined track.
You forgot to blame the Artificial Intelligence. All of the runners that are setting records have chips in their brains and don't even make their own in-race decisions anymore.
He still has just as many Olympic medals as Lagat. Sure the times may be artificial but even on an even playing field he is world class. I would be shocked if he doesn't grab another medal at the next Olympics.
