Also at 200m, it looked like Sumner was totally out of it, but he had by far the fastest closing 200m in the field.
Yeah, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone run a “tactical” 400m like he did. It’s almost like he was pacing it.
And the fact that 46.2 is actually an indoor PR for him as well. To be able to already do all this after an 18 month period of not racing at all, he’ll be one to watch out for in the coming years for sure.

Don't forget he was a 200/400 main in high school and ran 45.78 at the GA state meet back in 2022, likely could've ran 20.9x in the 200m too because he ran like 21.4 indoors that year.

Seems like he was in total injury hell for the last year. He went months without running at all and said that he didn't even start sprinting and wearing spikes again until the end of December. The fact that he's barely started serious training and is already hitting PRs is amazing.
He stated that he's gonna be focusing on the 400 for now and may not run the 800 for a while. Which I think is understandable, he still has an incredible ceiling for the quarter and he's already accomplished a lot in the 800m for someone his age.

He took down a 43.7(?) guy during the race, and the only person who beat him is my bet to be the next world record holder over the distance so I don’t think that’s a horrible idea for him. When you can’t get a good aerobic foundation for roughly a year it’s gonna take time to get that back too. He probably knows that he’s probably not PRing in the 800 this year, it’ll take a PR for him to be a factor at USAs so why not go all in on the 400m and then rebuild that base in the off season.

Hot take but I can't see Quincy getting the 400m WR. He doesn't have the top speed for it. He (somehow) has never broken 21 for 200m. His 1:50 800m and his ability in 500m/600m are way more promising. His talent is a lot like Sumner's.
