You sure about this, apparently that workout was filmed a few days after the Cowboy Jamboree, well before the Big 12 championships where German Fernandez won the individual title.
So if he got hurt, looks like it manifested sometime between the conference championships and the NCAA meet.
Yeah he was always going to get hurt unless he had a really smart/productive coach who managed hin ideally, which was unlikely to happen to begin with. If you look at Valby, her coach has designed a program that works for her on low mileage and cross training. Most coaches would force her to run the same as everyone else on the team and she'd be injured most of college. That's the difference between a smart coach who's proactive and incompetent or reactive coaches who run a sweatshop where only the most durable make it out alive.

Looks like German Hernandez was 5th at the midwest regional in 2008 and then didn't run at the NCAA championships.

He DNF’d NCAAs somewhere between 5k and 8k with an Achilles related injury if I recall. The prior premise that this workout broke him for all time doesn’t hold water as he ran a 3:55 World U20 indoor mile record a couple months later (indoor 2009). That held until this past weekend when Cameron Myers broke it. German then went on to win the NCAA 1500 wire to wire in 3:39.00 (pretty big deal at the time for an 18 yo true freshman to do so).

I love seeing all these German threads but I agree that this one has a flawed premise. Maybe this workout shows the symptoms that would eventually lead to his downfall but this was German in his prime. Every injury he had in this first year at OSU he managed to bounce back from and return to the superb form he had been building. After his freshman year that started to change and he ended up being an also-ran in his final NCAA 1500, though he did run 3:34 later that summer. It is evident from this video that German liked to rip workouts but he had always had injury concerns going back to high school. OSU and his Bowerman days were just where it started to be more than he could come back from.
