Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. Mabye he has more than one goal. I don't see how it hurts.

does everyone recall that mottram ran 27:56 at this very same meet a year ago, and was third??? that was 3 months before he went on to grab bronze at world champs. webb is going to really scare the AR this summer if he can just nail his racing schedule right.
it's really interesting that webb's 3:48 matches up almost identically to his pr's under purdy points. purdy gives us 8:12.6, 13:10.4, 27:34. it's really unbelievable. it shows that, if we assume that webb is best somewhere in the 1500 to 5000 distance, then he is capable of sub 3:30 and 12:55-58 in the 5k. maybe even faster, since he is only 23!
this is going to be a fantastic summer to be an american track fan, watching ritz, fam, webb, goucher, hall etc, and ok, i'll even cheer for lagat.
Purdy points are wrong: IAAF tables give 7:31,12:58,27:10 for a 3:48 mile. Webb is still a miler.

I was there, too. I haven't read thru the whole thread, but it should be noted that The Fam ran 59.8 to Webb's 61.2. The Fam post race antics were quite comical...he was a happy dude.
What was fam doing after the race that was so comical?
Fam ran past Webb on the victory run past the stands, waving his arms in the air, mugging shamelessly. It was very good natured after the race --Webb and Ritz seemed genuinely friendly to each other, and Fam was just goofy in an innocent, boyish way.
"...Webb is still a miler."
Yep. But now he has the endurance to make it through 4 heats of a 1500 championship and medal.
Webb was running back down the homestretch waving to the stands. Fam was back at the finish line and then came sprinting down the homestretch and leaned to 'beat' Webb. He stopped and turned to Webb and they congratulated each other and then walk back to where Ritz was and they all shook hands and slapped each other on the back. If there is a rivalry then it appears to be about pushing each other and not a hate type thing. They seemed to genuinely be happy about the race.
One of the Chico guys got this whole race on film. Now is he willing to share.

Webb has certainly proved he is the real deal.
I find it funny that the guy runs 3:49 at age 22 and he's not the "real deal" until he runs a good 10K. Maybe people on this board relate better to the 10k than the mile.

yah it seems friendly ritz said after the race (this is on the iaaf website) "damn those milers" kinda sarcasticaly haha
WEBB MUST STEEPLE.
webb must pole vault!
I wonder what Webb can run for 100m, 200m, and 400m? He's probably the most versatile USA runner right now. I say he can run 10.9, 22.0, and 47.3.
