That's a shame. Too young. It's a shame the NCAA doesn't let top guys from the D's 2 and 3 meets run the D1 meet anymore. I won't swear to this but I think he may have been the last D3 champ to do that. Anyway, here's a bit more about his way of doing intervals from Hodgie's website:

He was not the last one HRE. It continued for some time after that. Arnie Schraeder, for example, won DIII Cross in 1986 and then I recall was like 10th in D1.
This was revolutionary training for a distance runner. Quality work almost every day and very short-rest intervals. I emailed a bit with Danny in 2004 and he admitted that when starting most workouts he was never confident he could complete them.
Buzz off! If you call Danny, Daniel, it proves you never knew or even heard of him. Also, he was never married, nor had kids. He was a great runner, a wonderful person, and a great teammate.

Thank you. I'm glad I put in the thing about not swearing to it.

I too need to slightly correct myself. Arnie Schraeder was 11th in 1986, but still a fine showing, maybe 2 days after the DIII championships.
