Ryan Hall still has the best American half marathon performance

I don't think you'll find many to disagree with you. Need to get down to 58:30-45 to be on Hall's level. Or at least sub 59.

But it's a HUGE step in the right direction. Grant Fisher is the guy to take the AMerican record where we all know it can go. But huge props to Mantz for getting a huge monkey off his back and perhaps the back of American road runners in general.

The wind was awful this morning. The super shoes and the wind cancel each other out. Mantz is made for the roads.

What is that? Like, the 100th AR since cheat shoes came out? Hilarious! Wonder how many ‘21, ‘22, ‘23, and ‘24/25 times are at the top of the lists?

Runners from the 1980’s probably said the same sh*t about the asics flats Ryan wore during his AR so not sure what your point is.. shoes have always been improving.. with your logic the first marathon ever ran was the best performance

Actually, they didn’t. Flats Ryan used were no different than what they were using in the 80s other than slightly lighter and fancier looking. But you wouldn’t know that. I’m sure Hall still has the flats and would lend them to Mantz.

Hall's solo performance in 2007 was more impressive, but it was great to see Mantz fighting for the win today in addition to nabbing Hall's record.

Well, it is the sword too. If the sword is crap, you can't expect it to hold up when really put to the test. The super shoes are amazing. I grew up with minimalist flats (1990s) and switched to VaporFlys a few years ago. If you have never run in them, they are free speed.

p.s. We should just accept that the records will fall to people in the new shoes AND be respectful of what people like Hall did before the shoes were available. Hall is still a boss. That doesn't change. Mantz can't take anything away from how much of a beast Hall was. But to say "Mantz doesn't have the record" is insane. He does.

Unless the modern samurai has an AR-15. Technology matters.

He had a huge tailwind for most of the race. When running into the wind, he was able to draft behind the other runners. This was a wind aided performance.

Uh, not quite. All of Mantz’ pr were set in cheat shoes. None of his pre cheat shoe times are faster than Hall’s. He didn’t break 28 in 10k until after cheat shoes came out.

I don't care about the shoes, Hall was so much closer to the WR at the time than Mantz is now and it came out of NOWHERE. For those not around at that time hearing Hall broke 1 hour in the half was stupefying. Hall did it totally solo and crushed everyone, Mantz drafted in the hardest part of the race and he didn't win. Props to Mantz, it's embarrassing the AR had not been broken until now and he is a worthy recipient of it but there are so many reasons Hall's run was far superior.

How much of a boost? As another poster mentioned, there was significant wind. How do you know that canceled out the effect of the supershoes. Any evidence?

Hall was great. Mantz was great. Blah, blah, blah.... I just want to recognize their individual success and take satisfaction in my belief they know they achieved something extraordinary.

"cancel eachother out" shows just how good the shoes are. you're not making the argument you think you are making.
