Talent never goes away
He gets very little fanfare here but Hoey has had an astounding last 12 months.

This guy has been on a burner lately. Thinking he locks up #2 US 800m runner this year

I think he goes 1:42 in the 800m this year. Crazily enough, I think we’ll have like 3-5 guys in the US run under 1:43 this year. I’m pretty sure Hoppel, Kessler, and Hoey will, but I think Miller, Cohen, and Sumner (if he gets healthy) could have a mark like that too. I also wouldn’t be surprised if Hocker drops a really fast 800 in Grand Slam as he is a 3:27 guy with pretty noteable finishing speed.
Call me optimistic but we have a lot of relatively young, talented 800 guys in the US right now and the event has clearly taken a step forward which will pull everyone forward.
Unbelievable… progression recently.

I really honestly can’t tell if his dads millions of dollars and resources or Rinaldi that saved this man’s career or not.
It does make you wonder how clean he is. People were giving Ben Pattinson flak last summer for a big drop but Josh had an even more insane one 1:47 to 1:43 then runner up at 5th ave? I mean come on.
HOEY MOEY!!!!!

Am I remembering correctly that he is being trained by J. Rinaldi?
Amazing time! He is gonna easily be a favorite to make the team this year outdoors and indoors (if he runs it). He did run 2:17.xx last indoor season, so 2:14 isn't too crazy IMO based on him running 3:52 in the mile in Dec. Can't wait to see what he does outdoors!
The three Hoeys: Josh, Jonah, and Jackson. They should have a dual meet race against the three Ingebrigtsens.

He ran 1:47 indoors as high schooler. Huge talent but didn’t improve under his dads coaching as a pro. I remember his dad building a full track in their backyard to train during covid.
Gets a real coach and training group for the first time last year and runs 1:43
Two other running brothers and dad as a coach. Sounds like someone else we know.
That’s some of the ugliest running form I’ve ever seen. Doesn’t stop that acceleration though!

You guys are rough!
Kid had amazing talent in HS, but struggled to find the right fit for a number of years and almost chucked it in. Took a chance on a coach on the other side of the world, who truely believed in his talents and is now finally getting rewarded for all the hard work he puts in. Not saying I’m better than any of the previous coaches, just that maybe I believed in him a little more than the others maybe did and challenged him to think bigger.
The goal for today was to try and run under 2:15 (with an even first 800) and if he blew up, he might still manage to hang on and run 2:16 low. Getting that close to the WR was a surprise. But if you look at the World Aths points, it’s only equivalent to a 3:49 high mile, so maybe the WR is a little soft compared to the others.
Hopefully other athletes out there in a similar position can use this as motivation to keep getting out there and not give up. That said, Josh works harder than any athlete I’ve ever coached, so it’s not just talent alone that leads to success.
