No way the NCAA gets rid of Track and Field, It is pretty much The Farm System for the USA and some other Countries to become Professional Track and Field Athletes and World Championsips and Olympics. Many Legends once competed in the NCAA like Jesse Owens, Carl Lewis, Jim Ryun Too many to Mention.

Right, not NCAA but WHEN are the schools going to cut the programs? Are they waiting for April final decision? I don’t see what changes between now and then. Schools are already cutting rosters without the April decision. Schools and whole States are already creating means to pay players but I have not seen any mass cutting of whole programs and I don’t think we will see it either. In 2027, there will still be track and field programs at the majority of the power conferences and beyond.

Schools cutting whole sports now is just a tiny trickle.
They will have to see a year or two of what the new financial reality is before getting drastic.

So much so that I am surprised more have not come into this thread to express it but opinions change and maybe more see it for what it most likely is.
I doubt you'll see many Div 1 schools cut their entire programs, just reconfigure them.
I do think of all the events cross country is in most danger of being cut because it isnt represented at the Olympics. i actually think it would benefit some athletes, especially milers, to use the fall to rest and train for indoor/outdoor season as opposed to doing 4 months of grueling high mileage efforts. especially if less scholarship money is available and rosters are thinned - coaches will be more conservative with how they use their talent.

These rule changes and the revenue share issue will have long term effects that will take a while to play out. These universities will now have to decide where this money will come from to share with the student athletes. Right now they don't know exactly how it will play out.
The people saying massive team cuts will happen are projecting out in the future as schools realize they have to make adjustments somewhere to cover the revenue sharing issue. Those saying there will be cuts expect that many non-revenue sports will eventually be dropped. It's a pretty simple concept.
I think in 5-10 years there will only be about 40-60 universities who will have a full slate of college sports teams. Other schools will sponsor some sports and many, who are now school sponsored, will become clubs. There is no exact date this will happen but you likely know that.
Foolish.... Cross country is the cheapest sport in the athletic dept, has one of the highest GPA's, graduation and retention rates. It requires almost zero facilities for a school to maintain. The NCAA also requires schools to sponsor a specific number of sports for men and women to be retain membership, it's an easy counter sport towards that.
College athletics isn't just NCAA I. There are 970 NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA schools. No idea how many junior colleges. None of these programs are cutting anyone, they boost enrollment and help retain students.
NCAA I has made it's bed and now must lay in it. Track & Field and XC are just one of MANY sports dealing with the aftermath of these recent decisions. Money is the root of all kinds of evil - spoken of a long, long time ago.

Spot on. Schools are not going to cut immediately. This will be a slow burn IF the settlement is approved by the court. This is the best case scenario for XC and Track programs. Everyone on these boards lives in an echo chamber where they think XC/track is important. In the grand collegiate model it is not. FYI no one cares how the loss of college track will affect the USA's Olympic wins. This is the only way that our sport survives in the current form that we know and love at the D1 collegiate level. If this settlement is not approved then bye bye most collegiate sports when the NCAA implodes and schools create their own pro league. The D1level will be unrecognizable in 3-5 years but luckily D2, D3, and NAIA will still resemble the traditional collegiate sports model.

Most athletic departments use track/xc with its unique multi sport within one sport set up to balance the department numbers for title IX, GPA, graduation, APR etc.
Usually the track coaches are the LAST to know what the department wants. Why do you think there are so many stories from HS coach that go something like this:
X coach didn’t offer my kid a roster spot, then when school starts they let 6 girls walk-on!!!!
Translation, hey you need to add 6 women before football kicks off to make us compliant.
Once departments figure out their football, baseball, basketball rosters and revenue share then track will get sorted. This summer will be a blood bath

Sorry but you think the school administration cares about some farm system for pros?? T&F doesn’t generate any revenue for schools and frankly no one comes to these meets. It’s an easy sport to cut especially if there are 3 separate sub-sports within it.

Yes, but men's cross country could be 10 fewer women they have to fund to meet title ix requirements for the 150 man football team. Assuming NCAA D1 keeps its sports minimum we might see a lot of schools go xc only for men. While cross country is cheap, track is not. The alternative would be distance only track teams for men, but depending on the conference that team could get buried at conference meets. No school wants to fund a bottom of the conference team.
D2, D3, and NAIA will just become more competitive. NIRCA will become more competitive.
