Runs 1:17.2 for the school record then comes back to run 48.6 in the 400m just a little later. Pretty insane speed for someone we think of as a 1500m/5k guy. He could qualify for indoor nationals 800m-5000m, is there anyone else in the country who can say that?
Maybe Kessler will have another guy next to him during his prime in the 1500m trials.

I don’t want to rain on your parade but he’s run 1:45.6/3:33.9, which means he’s an 800/1500 guy. Still, an impressive double and his raw 400 speed is in a more exclusive class with Kessler and Green among US 1500m runners.

I know he's ran a fast 800 already, however he's also ran 13:38 and was considered the best xc runner in the country during his high school days. I think the majority of fans see his build as 1500/5000.

these guys just go by whatever your latest race is. if sahlman goes 13:25 this year then they will say he's a 1500/5k guy. if he runs a great 10k then he's a 5k/10k guy. then he runs a great 800m again and they are back to saying he's an 800/1500 guy. if he has a bad race then they will say he's done.

1:45.6 is worth a 13:15 by World Athletics tables. So he has to substantially PB to be a 15/5 guy. That’s just the truth. Not saying it can’t happen, but it’s just not his situation right now.
hearing this on january 10th gets me so excited for this year's season. LETS GO
Remember that these efforts are slightly aided by altitude. So we already know Colin is fast. This is what one would expect of him.
I wouldn't say the 600m is aided by altitude. this is coming from someone who has ran a 600m on NAUs track in the past, I had better performances that season at sea level...

I think Sahlman is one of the only people I don't want to classify yet, or maybe ever. Sure he's run 1:45/3:33, but he's also been training for those events specifically. In high school when he trained for 5k XC, he was better than everyone else in the country. He ran like 1:47/3:56/8:32/14:01xc in high school, and now he's running 48.6 in the 400m in his second race of the day. I think he's got the potential to make World/Olympic teams from 800-10k, whichever one he chooses. His range is unparalleled in HS running, and it might be the best in the NCAA currently (Nico had superior range in college imo, 1:47-26:52). Lucky for him too, because as great as he is in the 1500m, you have to be a top 5 guy in the world to make that team (which he very well may end up being).
He hasn't handled XC quite as well as I think most expected from a HS XC champ, but I've been saying for about a year that I think the Sahlmans are sticking to some faster stuff during XC, based on them both running 400m pbs in their first race of the season (last year), and now Colin running another 400 pb (of freaking 48.6) in his first race of the season. Could be wrong though, it's just speculation.
High school was 3 years ago for Colin Sahlman, and everything he’s done in college indicates he’s an 800/1500 guy. 1500 in bold because it’s his best event, probably now and forever. He ran 1:45.63 and 3:33.96 at 20 years old and he hasn’t placed higher than 67th at XC Nats. Plus we see the NAU coaching staff having him do 600/400 doubles…
Around the time C.S. was exiting high school, I remember Brosnan was asked who of all the NP studs he thought was the biggest talent. Brosnan didn’t give a straight answer (wisely), but said they had different strengths and singled out C.S. by saying “If you’re looking for someone who can run a really fast mile, Colin is that guy.” Remember, he ran 1:48.07 to win Brooks PR and 3:56.24y at Pre in high school.
Some people just can’t get around the fact he was a top 5k XC runner at the high school level. I won’t be surprised if he does eventually run 13:0X, but at that point he’ll be a 1:43/sub-3:30 guy and still best suited to those shorter events. Dude’s got wheels.
He ran that 13:38 nearly three years ago and has only improved, you don’t think he’s good for a 13:15?
He might be, sure. He also could probably go faster than that at 800. I’d refer to JWHs post above. To Peach Pit you might be forgetting Nathan Green. I think if Andy Powell had him racing 400s you could see him doing similar things. He’s “only run” 1:46.5 but that was almost 11 months ago and he’s gotten much better since.

I think you sort of nailed it but I am not sure if he will ever run 1:43 and 3:29. Of course that is what Webb did and he also ran 27:34, but Colin doesn’t seem to fit that profile, although I am not sure people thought Webb did either when he was young, and they were both good at XCountry in HS, largely because they were super talented middle distance runners. I do see Colin running 13:0x as you say, if he stays in the sport a few more years, but yeah 13:0x ain’t what it used to be. He is a 1500m/miler at this point.
