You’ve heard of advertising, right? If they made all those bags, they’re useless if they aren’t in consumers’ hands. What did you expect them to do, throw them all the way and write off the advertising costs?
Clearly you didn't read the article. If you read the guy's bag it says: 没关系 It doesn't matter. 再来。Come again. So: "Don't worry, better luck next time." I think it's quite a nice gesture. These weren't finishers bags, they were specifically made to cheer up people who DNF'd.. If your kid failed their driving test, wouldn't you take them out for a bite to eat to cheer them up? It's that kind of sentiment. In a way it's actually worse than giving nothing. In China on a marathon day people will spend the whole day walking around the city in their race t-shirt, so everyone can see they completed a marathon, but if you've got a bag saying you're a failure it's not so satisfying.
Well done mate! You be Judd Nelson's dad from The Breakfast Club. See how that works out for you. The irony here is that this topic relates to China. People here are happy to be hobbyjoggers and just enjoy the experience of running in a marathon but in every other area of their lives they have immense pressure and parents that act just like you, so I guess you should be happy your way of thinking would fit right in.

Why would you celebrate failure? I'd have them drive more to get better at it
