Skiing's appeal bemuses me. It's always been hard for me to understand why some people will spend large amounts of time and $$ in order to be cold, wet, and hurt.
Nevertheless, sincere condolences to his family and friends. Terrible for someone to go so young.
Because tearing down 5k+ feet of vert on a cold smoke powder day is the closest feeling you'll ever get to truly flying. Had closer run ins with injury and death through running than I ever have with skiing.

Skiing can be difficult to gage the danger, especially for amateurs and daring individuals. Tragic death, RIP.
Which resort has 5k vertical?
Aside from that, you're right. It's the flat bottom of the hill end of day slow trail that nailed my meniscus. Moral of story -- don't go slow.

Fun fact, we will all die one day. You can choose to live your life as you see fit. Personally, I’d rather die at 40 doing something daring than with dementia and Alzheimer’s at 90 being bed ridden and pooping my pants and not remembering my name. That’s no way to go out.
I assumed he hit a tree but the article says he went off an embankment.
Sonny Bono, actress Natasha Richardson (Liam Neeson's wife), and Heisman winner Doak Walker all died while skiing.
Horrible tragedy. Thinking of his family, friends and teammates.
Please try and be respectful as this guy's teammates are reading this thread. I made it so registered users only can post.
Thoughts to his family and friends.
Was truly excited to see a CBA guy run at a solid DIII college, his 14:40 was a great sign for the future. He’s gone too soon. Hope the family can come together and grieve and the team can march forward.

Such a sad story. Hug your loved ones.
I changed the links in the first post to link to original reporting instead of some website just regurgitating others original reporting.
I highly recommend people read the Williams release. Such a shame as he seems like a budding academic star in addition to being a state champ in running.
Class of 1969 Professor of Economics Dukes Love, who also taught Alex this fall, said, “Alex was one of the strongest students I’ve taught in 21 years at the college. Economics seemed to come naturally to him, and he took an obvious joy in learning. He had a quiet gift for the subject matter, while at the same time always leaving room for discussion: He might have known the answer, but he wanted to leave room to talk about it.”
In terms of running, he was the top freshman at NCAA xc at the DIII level:
Here are his HS stats (9:06 3,200):
