Does Japan have the worst food in the developed world?

you did know what Japanese cuisine was before you traveled right?

I was expecting a lot more seafood and a lot less unseasoned fried chicken.

I was also expecting an experience similar to when I went to Hong Kong: I wasn't a huge fan of most of the chinese food I had tried in the US, but Hong Kong had all sorts of amazing foods that I had never heard of.

Japan is good if you like Japanese food. Sushi, Udon, Katsu and Teriyaki. It is a very isolated country with few immigrants, so you aren’t going to find a lot of variety.

My sincere condolences for having the food opinions of a child and the taste buds of someone who grew up licking batteries.

Yeah, it really felt like they never made up for missing out on the spice trade during their isolationist years. From what I can tell, most of their foreign foods are very heavily inspired by the sorts of things American soldiers where eating in the 50s during the post war occupation.

Went to Japan a few years ago with my wife. Not only did we both lose weight on the trip while eating as much as we possibly could at all times, but we loved the authentic ramen so much that we wolfed down a bowl purchased with our final remaining Yen in the terminal at the Tokyo airport right before flying home. Probably one of the only places I've ever been where I truly didn't get somewhat sick of the local cuisine after 2+ weeks.

Also, putting French food below German food in your ranking list is hilarious to the point that you absolutely must be trolling here. The universal word for 'really good food' is in French for a reason.....

I'm evaluating the access to food in a regional in general, not necessarily my opinion of the country's native food.

I'd put native (Parisian) French food and native (Berlin) German food about even: I think Germany has better breads and meats, while France has better cheeses and and vegetables, which would put France ahead for me if not for the fact that they tend to ruin their dishes by using way too much butter for my tastes.

I give the nod to Germany in the actually listed ranking largely because the immigrant food culture (especially Turkish) in Berlin is much better than that in Paris. Maybe other cities are different, but I've only stayed a couple days in Frankfurt and in tiny villages in France otherwise.

US chains like KFC and McDonalds were super popular there. I'm not really a fan of plain burgers or fried chicken anyway, so I wasn't too excited to check it out

The west African, Chinese, Kurdish, Viet, and Bengali restaurants in Paris all suggest that this is a stupid post and whether ironic r not, you’re a stupid person

I'm not claiming that such places don't exist, just that they're harder to find to find than a good Turkish place in Berlin. I just typed in "Bengali food" on google maps in Paris and saw a handful of suggestions, with only one south of the seine and none outside the official city limits. Same with "west african," which didn't even a single option south of the river. It's pretty hard to walk down the street in Berlin without running into something tasty from the middle east.

This is a disguised list about diversity.

It also matters which meal we are talking about.

I love Japanese food but don't really dig on fish, rice, soup, veggies, dumplings, etc. for breakfast.

I think America has the best breakfasts (eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles, hash browns, sausages, muffins, etc.) but I usually choose Thai or Mexican food for dinner over "American food" like steak, ribs, burgers, or stuff like that.

BTW - It also depends if you want savory vs. creamy vs. meaty vs. healthy vs. spicy.

I think Germany, for example, has A+ food unless you are in the mood for spicy food. So each country has its strengths and weaknesses.

I think French food is better if you are going "all out" with really impressive cooking, chefs, and ingredients. That is why they are famous for their food.

But Germany wins if you are talking about fresh baked bread (dozens of varieties, not just baguette and white breads) and rolls, German bakeries are better. If you are talking about cured meats and sausages? German butchers are better. If you are talking about beer, Germany is better. Spätzle is better than any French noodle.

I feel like Germany nails the basics: breads, beer, noodles (Spätzle), hash browns (Rösti), cream sauces, dairy, meats, breakfasts, etc.

France is fancy and has "finer" tastes and flavors.

There’s many of both, but it’s true there’s Bengali around the train stations & more west African places further north as opposed to North African restaurants south of the river. Immigrants from specific areas often cluster in specific neighborhoods. Such enclaves often indicate more, not less, of a given population in a city. Is this last point news to you? Have you not left your couch in a while? Too busy making forum posts?

It also means I typically can't pop out to go to one of these restaurants during lunch or on my way home for dinner. Having concentrated clusters of cuisines like this also means that the food hasn't penetrated highly into the common culture, so if I ask one of the people at work "what good restaurants should I try?" they're less likely to suggest it.

I imagine almost every major city in the world has a diverse selection of good food if you're a local with the time to search for it, but if I'm staying somewhere for a few weeks of work and just have a few colleagues and google to use in my search it's often hard to find it.

Unlike Ricky Bobby, I am not ashamed to admit that I love crepes and French bakeries. German baked goods are good as well (although I have never been to the East German side). My limited experience tasting baked goods in Europe taught me that the quality of baked goods, food and life in general dropped off in the former communist countries. Vive La Liberte!

I have been unimpressed with the Japanese rice dumpling sweets. That being said, my kids love mochi. My favorite Asian cuisine is Thai. I have never been, but I hear the street food is amazing.
