Just announced - this came as a big surprise to me. How is he going to compete against the speedsters? What was the motivation for racing this New Balance (possible sponsor change coming up??)? What’s he going to run?
I’m thinking 3:35 mid would be a good race for him.
It would be, Wightman should be a good test. Like I alluded to on another thread that somehow got 3 downvotes LOL, I am surprised at this point, there is not more info out on this and Millrose.
No idea what kind of shape Fisher is in, but if he can move down and run 3:35flat, that would be a good sign. Would not put it past him to dip under that. He always seems to show up on race day. Great runner.

What thread? A lot of junk gets posted to this board by the430miler troll, which buries interesting discussion.

I am going to say 3:33 to 3:34. 3:35 is slow for an athlete with his credentials! He might even have a 3:32 in him! I was a 10,000m guy myself 29:05 but could crank out a 1:48 800m and Grant would murder me in a 1500m but probably not an 800m in my prime.

He’s running a lot of 3/5000m races. At Millrose he runs the 3K too. Just like NYC Grand Prix getting a shorter race in is good prep for kicking and sharpening tactics. I would expect him to be competitive but Wightman and Kessler (if he runs) can outkick or outrun him the last 400m

If Grant is racing the Grand Slam meet in May, wanting to be competitive but no throw off his periodization for big meets in July and after, it makes sense to do a lot of volume and some quality intensity, like races. The 1500 indoors allows him to work tactics in those multiple laps, which is what he wants to do with the 3000m races for Michael Johnson. Ultimately, he is not wrong. He needs to work on his tactics and not be so much of a robot on the rail.
Good move for Grant to run 1500 m before 3,000 m at Millrose and possible 5,000 m at Boston after that.
Exactly.
NBIGP simply a tune-up for the Millrose 3000 vs Hocker, et al.
Both races are essentially tuneups to prepare Grant for what likely will be a 5000 AR/WR attempt a week or two later at BU.
Continue to speculate if Jakob will be in that 5000 race, as there has been talk for a few weeks now of JI going after Bekele's 12:49 WR.
Important factor involved here: although Grant currently is the 2nd American and 13th worldwide via World Rankings quota for the Tokyo WC 5000, he does not have the 13:01 Q:
So, like last year where he used his two indoor races to prep for his 26:52/10000 Q at The TEN in mid-March, he's using the NBIGP 1500 & Millrose 3000 to prep for his BU 5000 Q a week or two later.
Just the fact that Grant has chosen to race a 1500 to open his 2025 season indicates how serious he is taking his 5000 Q attempt as well as the indoor season overall.
As others have previously posted, not expecting anything extraordinary to come out of his NBIGP opener.
However, that race should prime-the-pumps for an attempt at breaking Nuguse's 7:28.24/AR six days later in NYC.
Then, to wrap up his indoor "mini peak" as he has called it, a likely AR/WR 5000 attempt a week later at BU"s David Hemery Valentine Invitational or two weeks later at BU's Terrier DMR Challenge/Last Chance Meet where achieving his 13:01 Tokyo Q should be a foregone conclusion.
And, still to be revealed: will one Jakob Ingebrigtsen chose that race for a WR attempt?
A couple weeks down time will follow before Grant starts gearing up for USAs in early August, incorporating the spring GST meets into his long, slow buildup leading into the summer championship season.
