I've spent the last 2 months of a base building plan doing mainly threshold, progression runs, hills and strides building up to c. 55 miles/week with a long run topping out at 13.5 miles. My idea was to test my aerobic fitness with a half this week. Going into the half I did a mini 3-day taper as want to still keep mileage high in this base period.
Based on my threshold workout pace I thought I could run 1:26 range but fell short and barely cracked 1:29. Felt totally fine aerobically for the whole run clocking off low 6:30 miles in the first half but muscle fatigue set in badly from mile 9 and my legs felt like lead from then and I slowed to 7 min miles. I also noticed miles 9-12 my HR dropped by 5 bpm as I slowed down before I picked the pace back up in the last mile.
A couple reasons why I didn't perform could be a) fuelling (maybe need a gel mid race?), b) underestimating that I could perform at the HM distance without proper specific HM training (i.e. more long runs touching on HM pace throughout) or c) not enough taper (last 4 weeks have been my highest mileage weeks in over year and I only had a 3 day taper).
Any other ideas or suggestions or perhaps my expectations were just too high?
