Darts sensation Luke Littler became the youngest player to win the PDC World Darts Championship with a comprehensive 7-3 win over Michael van Gerwen at Alexandra Palace on Friday.
I don't understand the snide use of "athlete" with an asterisk. Obviously you don't have to be super-fit aerobically to be good at darts. You don't need a good vertical leap either, I assume - you have to be good at darts, though!
The point being, it doesn't really matter how you classify darts. It's this thing that people compete at, and it's popular enough that there's money in it. If someone wins a similar amount of money for playing chess, do you feel that their accomplishment would be diminished because they were unathletic?
"In 2005, darts was officially recognised as a sport by Sport England. Darts requires a lot of skill and precision, like some of the current recognised Olympic sports such as archery and shooting."
Many ask why we don't see darts in the Olympic Games, and the question is certainly divisive. We explore different arguments in our article, check it out!
17 million Americans play darts. If Barry Hearn gets his way, the profile of the sport in the US is likely to see a similar rise in 2025 to that in recent years in the UK.
Plans to expand in Boston, Las Vegas, Florida, Canada and South-East Asia. Age demographic has come down from 55-65 to 20-30 with 30% of audiences now women. Winning prize money to be doubled to £1m.
Littler could likely have been a sub 1:45 guy if he had chosen track instead of darts. But why should he when he can earn more in an hour's work than Wayanyi earns in a season?
Imagine running 180 km a week (Kiptum) for a 2 hrs marathon and earning less prize money than an obese 17 year old. His family can't even afford a toilet.
Darts is easy to play at a basic level but Luke "the Nuke" is a rare talent. At 17, he's also one of the very few players who doesn't drink during matches.

Hand eye coordination is a measurable athletic skill. As much so as jogging straight forward. Distance "running" is done at a speed at one third the velocity as elite 100 meter sprinting. Running a 40 minute 10k is closer in velocity to fast walking than it is to elite sprint speed. ...Linear, straight forward running at jogging pace is not at all any kind of special athletic "skill" as much as it is a function of free time to train. ...Hand eye coordination for being a dart champion is more impressive than most LRC hobby joggers here who struggle to break 40 minutes in a 10k
