The Outer Banks are alright. Fun beach towns. And nice running if you're from Roanoke rapids. Inland eastern NC though? Ya, you're not gonna have fun there.
Just drove thru those parts a day ago and have to agree with you, its a sad area.
Wilmington is nice. So is Carolina Beach

Mostly true, although Greenville is an exception since it has East Carolina University. The lack of anything else to do between Raleigh and the beaches is why ECU is such a party school -- you have over twenty thousand college kids trapped in an alcohol-soaked enclave in the middle of a third world country with nothing else except tobacco farms.

The new Buc-eez in Florence, SC is fun. But yeah that is SC.
Eastern NC has some terrible poverty, but there are some great places throughout. Just not in areas you're likely to pass on a major highway.
I grew up in PA but lived in NC for 10yr. Outside of the college centric areas and mini metros it is immediately hillbilly junction. Not much different than many/most states. But, it is a startling sight to see what are essentially shacks beside the tobacco/soybean and cotton fields.
The entire Triangle area from Greensboro through Raleigh is home to the craziest, worst drivers in the U.S. Forget Boston. Forget New York City, San Francisco, L.A., and even Atlanta. Raleigh drivers are the worst.
Lumberton, Laurinburg, and confederate flags until you get the beach! Very odd area for sure, lot of crime, drugs, and huge black bears. Don't forget about the wild red wolves too! Lot of closet and not so closet racists, from both sides

I'm from Raleigh too and I honestly have to agree... The East sucks. It's super neglected by the government so it's lowkey not their fault though. But hey, at least it's better than South Carolina!
