Sorry but Athing Mu doesn't deserve the "heartbreak of the year" award, or any recognition this year. She ran an 800 later in the summer and got DESTROYED. She wasn't fit enough to qualify for the team. PERIOD.
Heartbreak of the Year should have been Kelvin Kiptum dying in a car crash and/or Rebecca Cheptegei dying after being set on fire by her former boyfriend.
Glad Parker Valby was included. No mention of Valbymania by JG? Missing was Doper of the Year. Multiple candidates and possibly some to be announced retroactively.
It's track. That means the athlete of the year is very likely also the doper/PED user of the year by default. You want to believe they're beating the world's best, setting all-time records, and being clean? Come on now.
I’d probably have CJ not making the Olympic team as a bigger heartbreak in retrospect. You’re correct that we later found out that Mu was badly injured and the fall might’ve shielded her from further heartbreak in either not making the top 3 of getting bounced early in Paris. Hoping Kersee does a better job this year as outside of Sydney his results were abysmal this year.
Fred Kerley deserved some sort of award for his roller-coaster year. Noah Lyles something for constantly moving the needle for better or for worse.
EDIT: great callout by JWH on Girma.

Prove you didn’t decide to add more year-end pieces after seeing this post. Fault ends the article saying “that’s the entire list” so doesn’t sound like there is another award coming for race of the year….
After all the months of Jakob vs. Kerr smack-talk, it was great to see Cole come in an rewrite the whole narrative. Props to Cole for ignoring the "storyline" and writing history.

You prompted me to watch that race again (for the 100th time). Can we appreciate how amazing it was that Hocker had to check his sprint when there was no gap on the rail, then accelerated again when it opened up and got to the line first?
Seriously? Athing Mu heartbreak of the year? What about the athletes she impeded with her clumsy fall? Hurta-Klecker's race was ruined and Rogers had to jump over her. Everyone except Schoffield and Wilson were affected by the fall. And then Mu just cries and whines that it is unfair while her coach proposes rule changes in the media. No apologies.
She could have gone to the Diamond League and wreaked havoc. But she didn't. Why? Because she hates running and was out of shape anyway. We have no reason to believe she would have finished in the top 3 at the trials. Heartbreak my ass. I hope she retires.
She's not going to make the Worlds team. I question whether she will even show up and try.

Amazing.
It was also incredible to watch him get destroyed in Laussane, Zurich, Brussels, and counting....

Yeah, that's what we'll be talking about in twenty years. Or what historians will record regarding great moments in American Track and Field history.
