Was catching up on the pod and doing some work this afternoon, looking forward to the Young/Jones interview.
Talk about two different ballgames: Jones was upbeat, talkative, conversational. She gave, I thought, a very candid, fun, and open interview talking about her lead up to Paris and the decision to jump into the 400h.
Nico was...much less impressive. Flat, boring, closed off and indifferent. I haven't seen video of the interview, but I could only imagine the blank and far off look on his face.
Therein lies the issue with the sport and its popularity. Nico Young was the face of the NCAA and presumably a force to be reckoned with for years to come on the international stage- to give that flat of an interview, what felt like pulling teeth, was embarrassing for the sport. I'm not sure if there is some media training he needs to do or what, but that was a hard listen.
I'll clarify that it wasn't the question or the interviewer- Nico just may not be personable at all. It's just hard to imagine that as such a household name in the running world that he could be that static.
