why even do it if he’s gonna jog it? No hate just curious cause he looked very out of it - high school meets aren’t the priority wouldn’t it be better to save his legs?

If he does not run 2:01 here, he is going to run 2:01 in a workouts at practice. What's the difference?
Most high schools run tons of meets. Good coaches tell you where to race hard, and when to coast to keep you from burning out.
A 45/1:50 guy going 2:01 in early season is not a problem.
Quincy is crazy talented in the 800m. He plays football in the fall and probably hasn't run longer than like 600m in the last six months. Yet he was randomly able to drop a 1:50 last spring.
The 800m may frankly be his event, and I hope he moves up soon. I don't think he has the raw 100m speed to ever reach the upper echelon of the 400m: yes, he could of course be great, but the fastest times are all run by sub-20s 200m guys. As I read from another poster on these boards, the next great 400m runner still thinks he's a 100m-200m guy.

it's a fair take at first glance. would be nice to not be so ruthless and downvote the ish out of people when they actually are just curious
admittedly haven't even watched the video yet but am looking forward to it. i love the way he runs. especially enjoy how many people show their own incompetence hating on his form, so long as it doesn't get to him personally and mess him up like alsal did with mary's form morphing into a robot.
anyhow, it would be amazing if we could normalize racing off-events with no intention of going all-out.
i know it's not running culture, but could we please change this? make it ok for a 400 runner to jump in a 1500 and absolutely grenade after the first 1k. it's good for their fitness and on a bigger level can be inspirational to others in terms of mixing it up in an event that isn't necessarily one's specialty.
there is something about getting your head absolutely smashed in amidst an off-distance race; it brings up one's ability to suffer in their A-event without eroding any self-confidence

Split 1:50 last year.
he doesn’t look in shape.
It did indeed look like he was out of shape. His first lap basically kept pace with his teammate, but he was progressively dropped. Also, by the way he didn't acknowledge anyone after the race made it seem like he definitely wasn't happy with the run.

If the 800m was his event, he’d be running a bit faster than 1:50.
Hear me out,
A 400m runner of his caliber training under the coaches he is, is more likely than not already doing plenty of extensive tempo work like 200s off of shorter rest and some hard 300m reps. Even though he is most definitely not doing “800m specific” training, his training is probably better 800m training than most high schoolers are getting.
He could be a 400m runner that is 800m capable, I mean he is, 1:50 is insane for a highschooler. But a 16 year old running a 44.x likely doesn’t have the muscle fiber composition needed to run something like a 1:43. I always see people on this board asking why a 43-44 guy doesn’t just start running 30 mpw and break the world record. It’s because they cant. I could see him being a 1:44-1:46 guy but why do that and be an also ran caliber pro when he’s showing the potential to be a world beater over 400m?
800 is his event? WTF is wrong with you? The kid is 16 and ran 44.2 & you already want him to move up.
Morons on this board are amazingly crazy....m
.
Quincy is the 3rd fastest 800m runner of all time, according to the hypothetical LetsRun standings. Right behind the hypothetical GOAT Jeremy Wariner and WVN.
”He can run a 44s 400m, why doesn’t he just jog the first lap in a 50 and come home in 49?” - hundreds of LRC posters who have never run a real 800 in their lives
What, because Obea never made it big. He also ran 1:49.16 when that was a top 5 time in the country most likely or better. Obea was a freak show, only circumstances (some self made ) prevented him from absurd greatness. In his Wikipedia it says he missed Q SAT and ACT scores by 1 point, that's a little hard to believe as why not do multiple retakes. He should have Prop 48'ed it it easily, but focus on academics was not a strong suit. I was at Penn, when Obea cranked out his epic anchor I will never forget overhead PA announcer call.
