He ran five marathons in 2024 (an unusually low number for him), in times ranging from only 2:21 to 2:42. Has he been having injury troubles? What gives?

So the poster that hates non American-born American runners loves Yuki.
I don't see how people can down-vote questions. It makes no sense. If you don't care about Kawauchi, why would you click on this thread?
We are not professional track journalists, so if you know something about Yuki, please share. If not, you can just wait for info like the rest of us...

He has been struggling with injury problems for basically a year now, to be specific some kind of left hip/left leg issue as far as I remember. Actually he has been very transparent about it on his twitter page.
Since he apparently didn't want to cancel races he already got invited to he continued to participate in races, sometimes as a mere jog. As a fan, it honestly was often a bit frustrating because it just didn't seem like he was on the path to the fastest possible recovery.
Over the last ~two months, it seemed as if there was hope that he would soon be able to perform at his old level again because he appeared to be able to train more regularly and ran a 68:43 at the Ageo Half Marathon, which was his best result since january. He announced a sub 2:20 attempt at the Hofu Marathon four weeks ago, but unfortunately that went pretty badly with a time of 2:33. At least he did run a 2:22 two weeks later however, so I guess we will have to wait and see what happens next.

The upvotes and downvotes often don't seem to make much sense. I remember that I once posted something like "good luck, I hope that your race goes well" and got downvoted.

and now i see why nobody get's fazed by a bunch of downvotes and keeps plowing through no matter how dumb or irrelevant his opinion is. just people downvote for the sake of it and of course the downvote gets devalued and nobody takes it seriously. very very rarely i've even seen people acknowledge the votes at all. that's one of the reason i commented here, because it's one of the like 5 times somebody mentiones them. :D
He ran 2:09 just 14 months ago in a pretty incredible race. Using only the last 12 months as a basis to judge him is misleading. Yes, I'm sure he's past his prime, but when he decides to put in the work, he's still one of the top Japanese men marathoners.

Yeah. I once got down voted for thanking another poster who answered a question I'd asked. Really? Anyway, it is correct that Kawauchi has had injury troubles but is trying to get going again. I have a friend who knows him and told me this.

I'm seeing quite a bit of upvotes relative to downvotes on the post asking the question, but I agree with your general sentiment.

What I don't fully understand is why people downvote things that they don't care about? My downvotes are reserved for things I disagree with. If someone says, "Hocker will never win another big race" then I would downvote that. He probably will. I disagree with that take, and I downvote it.
But downvoting a question like, "Does anyone know what Cooper Teare is up to?" makes no sense.
It is very telling that some teenagers (I assume) think it is "funny" to downvote everything as a joke. The problem is that it isn't funny. It isn't even annoying. It is just weird to click a thread and bother with voting at all if you don't care about that thread...
We know he won't win any more major races, but he is an everyman type athlete and a fan favorite. We are curious what he is up to, not whether he will win big races again. We like him so we are curious.
I am just interested to know what he is up to and if you don't know, you don't have to post anything. If you do know, thanks in advance for sharing! :)

Uncle Bosie has as much right to post as you do. Yuki is turning 38 on March 5th. He has a lot of miles on those legs. Maybe respect his privacy at this time.

Try posting about being successful at something. It's a downvote avalanche. People get really offended by those that talk about their success.

This is true. Either they think the person is lying, or they think it is arrogant, but downvotes come in spades when one says one has accomplished something meritorious, so anyone who worries about downvotes should just lurk and not post.
