Maggie Munson- current Wisconsin Badger Track and Cross Country Athlete and UW-Madison VOICEINSPORT Chapter President - went on The Great Dane Huddle in Madison last week to speak with former Wisconsin Coach and Athletic Director, Barry Alvarez; and NFL and Wisconsin Badger Football players Tarek Saleh and Derek Engler to discuss the lack of a current adequate training facility, no plan for a competitive indoor track, the negative impact to the community, and possible Title IX violations at Wisconsin as a result of the current building designs in the approved $285 million reconstruction project by Camp Randall.
By not delivering on the promise of “state of the art” track & field facilities, it undermines the University’s commitment to the surrounding community that would reap benefits from access and use. Public research universities have a responsibility to ensure the vibrancy and prosperity of their communities - like the Lets Run community members.
Madison’s youth sports programs are in desperate need of high-quality indoor facilities. A competition-compliant track would provide space for local high schools, youth organizations, and community track clubs to train and compete during Wisconsin’s long winter months.
After a $285 million investment, Dane County and Southern Wisconsin will be left without ANY competition facility to offer to the neediest, let alone the athletes - and will still be sending WI state tax dollars to Illinois to "host" UW Home Track & Field Meets in Chicago. And will be doing this in perpetuity given the Athletic Director let Ms. Munson and former coach Ed Nuttycombe know he's not interested in supporting another capital campaign for a state-of-the-art Track & Field facility.
Thus, we MUST hold accountable this $285 million approved facility to include the promised design for a world class facility that meets the 'critical space needs for each athletic department'
