Amazing 47 second improvement from junior to senior. Seems like Vause is just getting started. So cool to see him win NXN in those conditions. Honestly never heard of him before this race. His HS, Rio Rancho, is at 5,290 ft altitude, which surely helps all those athletes who live and train at that level.

Great kid. Great interview.
Altitude is misunderstood and is far less of an advantage as most flatlanders think. There are plenty of DISadvantages to living and training at altitude that no one ever talks about as well.
Research on altitude effects have been done almost exclusively on those who train at sea level and use altitude as a "bump". If altitude was clearly that big of an advantage, NO pros would live anywhere except at altitude.
Research also suggests 7,000' to 8,000' is the sweet spot for most of altitude's benefits.Flagstaff and Santa Fe are at 7,000'. Colorado Springs at 6,000'. Denver, Boulder and Albuquerque at 5,000'. SLC at 4,500'.
One thing to mention about him is that it appears his family moved from Milford, OH (Cincinnati suburb) to New Mexico between his sophomore and junior years of high school. Perhaps he's had a big response/benefit to transitioning to altitude in the past ~18 months or so.

There’s usually only one big improvement from one year to next, during HS,so it’s not likely he’s just getting started.
He did run 4:12 as a sophomore and I’m thinking maybe he put in some serious mileage for the first time this summer.
cmon bro. wheres your sense of civility, or positivity? dont you know that God is much more present in the lives of the poor than He is in the rich? I've lived in a third world country. The faith of those people is nothing short of inspiring. Hate is shameful and needless
To think that a 9:06 2 miler would handily win nationals, looking super strong the last half mile, in this age of 8:30s and 8:40s guys is amazing. He reminded me kind of Kenny Cormier, an Arizonan who began running high mileage just that year, up to 120 per week. He was a home-schooled, multi-sport athlete who had 4:21/9:23 pr's coming into senior year and came out of nowhere to win footlocker in 2004. At Arkansas, he finished 28th in xc as a true freshman (if a year older), before joining the Marines and serving multiple tours in Afghanistan.

What are Iten and Eldoret altitudes?? Families and living situations are different as well for people..
Not yet, but maybe soon. BYU doesn’t have many spots left with the 17 rule, they’ve already used 2, and there are other top guys still wanting a BYU spot.

Probably too young and American for UNM to consider.
