Posters here often mock me for suggesting that there might be quite a few soccer players earning one million dollars a week who could have been world-class 800m runners. Or that Kenya and Ethiopia benefit from having 99.9% of their professional athletes devoted to distance running.
25-year-old Kate Axford switched from hockey to distance running last year because of injury, beginning with just 'going for runs' WITH NO PRIOR BACKGROUND IN RUNNING.
This year, she won bronze in the 3000m at the UK indoor athletics Championships, just 12 months after going for her first run. Then in the summer, she made her outdoor track debut by running a 5000m in 15:19, which was the 7th fastest by a British woman this year.
Now she is running for GB at the European Cross Country Championships this weekend in Turkey.
